1 Station 3: The Respiratory System

2 Directions: As a group, go through the following powerpoint. Follow all directions given on each individual slide. If you finish before the 12 minutes, as a group summarize what you learned in this station. Remember you only have 12 minutes. Self pacing is key!!

3 Respiratory System Directions: Use the table provided below to fill in your own guided notes. What is its function? -To bring oxygen into the body and expel CO2 Who is involved? - Lungs the organs that absorb oxygen from the air we inhale and exhale excess CO2 - Alveoli tiny air sacs where oxygen and CO2 diffuse in and out Oxygen diffuses out of these sacs into the blood CO2 diffuses from the blood into the alveolus sacs

4 Video: The Respiratory System
Directions: 1. Silently read the following question before watching the video (45 sec) Why does your breathing rate increase when you stand up after lying down? 2. Silently watch the video and take notes. (4 min) 3. Discuss and answer the above question with your group.(3 min)

5 Connection to Homeostasis
Use the table provided below to fill in your guided notes. How does this system work to maintain homeostasis? Diffusion of oxygen and CO2 out and into the alveoli help keep a constant level of these gases within the cell When oxygen and CO2 are not at desirable levels to allow your cells to function properly, the respiratory system responds by the change in your breathing pattern. You breathe faster or slower Why do the levels of oxygen and CO2 need to remain within a specific range? Our cells require a constant supply of oxygen Our cells need energy in the form of ATP in order to function Oxygen is one of the key ingredients for ATP production Wastes such as CO2 are toxic to our cells.

6 Early Bird Assignment As a group, summarize what you learned in this powerpoint and the video.
