4 The Student’s role in the practicum
Students are required to secure a practicum position that formally integrates their academic studies with work experience, allowing them to apply the knowledge and skills they have learned and to explore their interests and aptitudes.

NABU 480 Course You will be asked to identify: Your learning objectives for the practicum work experience The industry sector(s) in which you would like to work Specific organizations and positions within those sectors The actions you will take to obtain the position you require Start this now if you have not already done so!! Co-Op Work Permit Have you applied for your Co-Op Work Permit? You cannot start your practicum placement (paid or unpaid) unless you have received your valid Co-Op Work Permit. Apply here

6 STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES

7 Step 1 - In preparation for securing a practicum, ensure:
resume is up to date, formatted to acceptable Canadian standards write a persuasive and grammatically correct cover letter The Career Development Centre is able to support students. Book an appointment at

8 Step 2 – Cap U ONLY able to provide support for unpaid practicums.
You are required to register and create a profile with the University’s approved practicum placement service firm – Stepwest Opportunity to find paid practicum, but must be confirmed by the specified deadline If you do not to register with Stepwest during the specific time period - forfeit your right to utilize this service.

9 Step 3 - There are two options for securing a practicum placement:
Option 1: Find a practicum placement yourself (unpaid or paid). You must have: job description approved by instructor Instructor decisions are final have attended an interview received a written offer of employment official letterhead and signed by the appropriate supervisor/manager If unable to meet all of the above criteria by the set deadlines, you will be required to switch to Option 2.

10 You must decide on option a) or b).
Choose to continue to find a practicum placement yourself (unpaid or paid), or Engage the University’s approved practicum placement service firm - Stepwest to secure a practicum placement You must decide on option a) or b). You cannot decide to work with Stepwest, but continue to try to find your own position.

11 Option 2: If you choose option b), you will: have already registered and created a profile with Stepwest make an appointment to further discuss your interests, skills and abilities Stepwest will select and arrange interviews with suitable organizations. Stepwest require all students to actively engage in the practicum placement process at least 4 weeks before the NABU 480 and/or the NABU 490 practicum start date.

12 Students who are unable to meet all of the above criteria by the set deadline dates will no longer be allowed to continue to work with Stepwest. Exceptional circumstances aside, the University and its partner institutions will no longer continue to work with students after specific deadlines have passed. Failure to secure an approved practicum, may result in students being unable to complete the requirements of the NABU 480 or NABU 490 courses. In turn, this may also impact your status in Canada.

13 NATIONAL OCCUPATIONAL CLASSIFICATION (NOC)

14 NOC The National Occupational Classification (NOC) is the national reference on occupations in Canada. It comprises more than 30,000 occupational titles gathered into 500 Unit Groups, organized according to 4 skill levels and 10 skill types. Unit Groups are based on similarity of skills, defined primarily by functions and employment requirements. Each Unit Group describes main duties and employment requirements as well as providing examples of occupational titles. STUDENT GUIDE

15 NOC What are NOC Skill Type 0 and Skill Levels A, B & C?
Skill Type 0 refers to all management occupations. The NOC codes for these occupations begin with 0. Skill Level A represents occupations usually requiring university education Skill Level B represent occupations usually requiring college education or apprenticeship training.

16 NOC What are NOC Skill Type 0 and Skill Levels A, B & C?
Skill Level C* corresponds to occupations usually requiring secondary school and/or occupation-specific training A, B & some C* business related skill level positions will be considered. 19 NABU 490 Pay close attention to all timelines and deadlines. Failure to meet the requirements of your practicum courses may impact your ability to complete your program, leaving you in breach of the terms of your study permit.
