1 Warm Up – Who are the three Royal Governors
Warm Up – Who are the three Royal Governors? Who do you think was the best? Why? Today I am learning about the reasons for establishing a colony in Georgia so that I am able to explain why my state was founded because if it were not for the English we would not be here today.

2 Warm Up - Name and describe one difference between the Trustee and Royal periods.

3 Royal Colony Notes

4 Royal Colony 1) Captain Reynolds sailed to Georgia to become first Royal Governor (appointed by the King). 2) Established own legislature – upper house (Governor’s Council) had appointed members and the lower house (Commons House) had elected officials. (bicameral) Represented the 8 parishes in the colony. 3) Elected Representative – own at least 500 acres of land 4) Voting – own at least 50 acres of land, white male 5) Land Ownership – unlimited amount of land 6) Henry Ellis (2nd Governor) and the Royal Assembly declared the Anglican Church as the official church of Georgia. * brought economic growth to the colony * saw the colony’s population grow to 10,000 (3,600 slaves) * many influential and wealthy Georgians participated in the government of the colony

5 7) Sir James Wright (3rd and final Governor) was the most popular and was very concerned about the well being of the colonists. * 1763 first newspaper in Georgia started, The Georgia Gazette * more schools, but still only for the wealthy * strengthened Georgia’s forts and defenses * farmers allowed more credit (loans) and they bought more land * Sunbury grew and became Georgia’s official port of entry into the colony French and Indian War 1) French and Indian War – Britain and British Indian allies vs. French and French Indian allies Example: British ally – Iroquois Confederacy in New York French ally – Huron Nation in Quebec

6 French and Indian War (cont.)
2) Disagreement over land in North America, especially the Ohio River Valley. The future president, George Washington, is thought to have started the war. 3) War ended with the Treaty of Paris of 1763 (France turned over New France (Quebec) to the English and other territories) 4) Proclamation of 1763 – England established new colonies in North America to help pay for French and Indian War debt (one of the first causes of the Revolutionary War) – no settlers west of the Appalachian Mountains 5) Border changes Northern – Savannah River Southern – St. Mary’s River Western – Mississippi River Eastern – Atlantic Ocean 6) Cherokees and Creeks give up land between the Ogeechee and Savannah Rivers north to Augusta and the coastal land south of the Altamaha River

7 Georgia Royal Assembly enacted slave code in 1770
Offspring of slaves would remain property of parents owner Slaves could not travel outside the town or plantation limits without a ticket/pass; if found without a ticket/pass or not in company of a white person they would receive a whipping of no more than 20 lashes on the bareback If a slave struck a white person, they would be tried and convicted; punishment would be what the jury saw fit except life or limb; second offense punishable by death Any person employing a slave on Sunday’s, except in work of absolute necessity, would forfeit 10 shillings Anyone teaching a slave to read or write would forfeit a sum of 20 pounds (fine)
