When the index is even, the radicand must be positive. (If not, undefined) When the index is odd, the radicand can be either positive or negative.

4 Working with Radicals For any negative real number a, when n is even….
In other words, put absolute value symbols around a variable when you go from even index to odd exponent outside.

5 Rule to Remember Rule for ± sign
ONLY used when solving an equation and taking an even root of both sides

6 Multiplying Radical Expressions
You can multiply two radical expressions with the same index. Given the same index, multiply radicands and simplify result.

7 Dividing Radical Expressions
When we divide radicals, we are really RATIONALIZING the denominator. To rationalize, you multiply both the numerator and the denominator by the expression needed to remove the radical from the denominator
