Italian Agency for New Technologies Energy and the Environment Survey on Small Combustion Installations in the Commercial Sector EGTEI meeting – Paris, 10 th of April, 2006 State of the work T. Pignatelli - ENEA

Italian Agency for New Technologies Energy and the Environment Survey on Small Combustion Installations EGTEI meeting – Paris, 10 th of April, 2006 Initiative announced at the WG S&R Meeting, Sept 2005 Works carried out jointly by ENEA and National Labor Bank of Italy The survey concerns Small Combustion Plants operated by BNL in its own agencies, on the Italian territory, for heating use Survey started in January 2006 Main objective : collection of techno-economic data to be made available for the purposes of EGTEI

Italian Agency for New Technologies Energy and the Environment Boiler Categorization EGTEI meeting – Paris, 10 th of April, 2006 Technical sheets for hundreds of plants have been collected 2 main classes of boilers can be identified: 1) Horizontal boilers (ranging between 35 and 685 kW, + 4 units 1082 kW) RAINS_Category: Medium boilers (<1 MW) RAINS_Category: Single house boilers ( <50 kW) 2) Vertical wall boilers (below 35 kW) Both classes burns oil or gas and are manual/automatic No abatement technologies seem to be applied, with the exception of the regular maitenance
4
Italian Agency for New Technologies Energy and the Environment Proposed methodology for the analysis Statistical analysis (distribution of boilers in size sub-classes) to identify 1 or more predominant boiler sizes, as Reference Installation Collection of data on annual fuel consumption, for each identified Reference Installation Analysis of the flue gases, (in a number of cases available from the maintenance practices) to evaluate Emission Factors This methodology should provide a picture of the current situation EGTEI meeting – Paris, 10 th of April, 2006
5
Italian Agency for New Technologies Energy and the Environment A look to the future From the discussion with the BNL Energy Manager (Dr. Cavallari): A look to the future (within next 5 years) provides indications of: - fuel switching from oil to gas for medium boilers, as possible - increased electricity consumptions for conditioning EGTEI meeting – Paris, 10 th of April, 2006
6
Italian Agency for New Technologies Energy and the Environment Constraints to the analysis Data on costs are poor and global (e.g. kEuros/m 2 ) Future perspectives are limited to the next few years Some cost data could be restricted because market sensitive EGTEI meeting – Paris, 10 th of April, 2006

Italian Agency for New Technologies Energy and the Environment Selection criteria 2) The most common brand in EU, among different manufacturers 3) Within each size class, boilers burning gas and oil 1) 2 or 3 selected boilers for each size class, between 100 and 600 (Mcal/h) Taking into account of suggestions expressed from experts at the Paris EGTEI meeting: 4) Two identical boilers (brand, size, model) characterized by different age 5) Among different boiler ages, at least one particularly new to estimate the best performances Horizontal Boilers Vertical Wall Boilers: At least two boilers. All of them fall in the same power class WG S&R – Geneva, September 19-22, 2006

Italian Agency for New Technologies Energy and the Environment Data collection schema 1) Brand, model 2) Nominal Power 3) Typical Operating Power (Load factor) 4) Fuel Type and characteristics 5) Fuel Consumption per year 6) Daily operating hours (average) and months per year 7) Flue gas analysis 8) Year of entry into operation 9) Manual/Automatic starting 10) Maintenance (ordinary, extra, frequency) 11) Filters, burner replacement, design modifications etc. 12) Estimated Boiler life WG S&R – Geneva, September 19-22, 2006
