2 Aims of the Orientation Session
To understand the objectives and expected outcomes of the workshop. To review and confirm the workshop programme (timetable). International Training Centre of the ILO

3 Development Objective
To reinforce the African trade unions’ capacity for advocacy and influencing policies on employment, social protection, collective bargaining, social dialogue policies and related issues. International Training Centre of the ILO

4 Specific Objectives of the Workshop
Refresh participants’ knowledge and skills on the concept of research methodology and approaches in relation to employment and social issues. Discuss country reports with a view to identifying common challenges confronting trade unions in the field of research. Deepen understanding about trade union research on employment and social issues – a global perspective. Identify trade unions’ research priorities on employment and social issues in Africa. International Training Centre of the ILO

5 Specific Objectives of the Workshop
Develop strategies aimed at reinvigorating the research network of the African trade union movement. Develop Actions Plans. This will entail identification of relevant key research topics or problems and formulation of simple tools for data collection and processing. Suggest a way forward. Evaluate the course. 6 Key Issues to be Discussed
Introduction to research methodology – meaning, purpose, characteristics, motive, types and process. An overview of trade union research on employment and social issues – a global perspective. Trade unions’ priorities of employment and social issues in Africa. The research process and role of trade unions researchers. ILO’s approaches to understanding research in employment and social issues – global perspectives. Country reports. International Training Centre of the ILO

7 Key Issues to be Discussed
Modern techniques for data collection and analysis on employment and social policy. Techniques for data analysis on employment and social policy. Identification of research topics on employment and social issues in Africa. Report writing skills for trade unions. How to make the African trade union research network more effective? How to develop individual national and regional Action Plans? International Training Centre of the ILO

Clear knowledge about the concept of research methodology and purpose. Identification of research topics on employment and social issues of relevance to the trade unions in Africa. Development of research tools for data collection and analysis. Development of individual national and regional Action Plans. International Training Centre of the ILO

Methodology The workshop aims to be participatory and will involve extensive group work. Therefore be active and participative in all activities throughout the workshop. Your experience would not only inform everyone but also enable all of us to come up with Action Plans that would be workable and relevant. Feedback is welcome on a daily basis. Evaluation The course will be evaluated on a daily basis by gauging the activism of participants and the effectiveness of group exercises & continuous feedback on the interactions between participants and resource persons. Also, there would be an end of workshop evaluation sessions that will enable us identify what worked and did not work well, and why? Post-workshop evaluation based on actions taken by participants and their trade unions at regional and national levels. International Training Centre of the ILO
