I can explain the impact of poverty, the war on drugs, and migration to the United States on Latin America. I can explain the impact of the Cuban Revolution and describe the current relationship between Cuba and the United

3 Instructional Strategies
Vocabulary Foldable: The teacher will print off the foldable for each student. The students will cut the template out along the thick, outside lines. They will now be able to open up each flap and write information about each key term underneath. Latin America’s Modern Issues Instagram:The students will draw an Instagram- inspired picture to represent modern issues that Latin America is facing (poverty, War on Drugs, & migration to the US).In each caption box, they will describe what the picture is and how it is important to the topic Immigrant Diary:The students will write a diary entry from the perspective of an immigrant to the US from a Latin American country. They should include information about what life was like in their home country (mention poverty or War on Drugs), as well as what life is like now that they are in the US. What struggles are they facing now?

4 Instructional Strategies
History Board:The teacher will print off the Cuban Revolution History Board handout for each student.The students will create a storyboard of the major events of the Cuban Revolution. The students will write a brief description under each caption and draw a colorful illustration for each event. Get Your Game On:The students will create a video game about the Cuban Revolution. On the front (right side), they will design an all-encompassing cover about the Cuban Revolution. On the back (left side) they will draw one exciting “level” and summarizes it in the textbox. A Cuban Refugee’s Postcard:The students will imagine that they are Cuban refugees who have escaped life in Cuba and are starting a new life in Miami. They will write a postcard to a family member or a friend still on the island & describe how different life is now that they are no longer living under Castro’s Communist regime.On the front, they will draw an illustration

5 Formative Assessment Comprehension Check:The students will complete this handout at the end of the lesson. The teacher will count this as a quiz! Ticket Out the Door: In My Thoughts: Think about the modern issues that Latin American countries are facing. Answer this question on the lines below: Why do you think many Latin Americans migrated to the US? Answer this question in the head below: What would you do in the situation? Ticket Out the Door: Recycle It :The teacher will have the students connect today’s lesson with something that they’ve previously learned. *Most will make the connection between this information and what they learned about the Cold War. They will explain how the “recycled material” relates to the new concepts from today’s lesson.
