1 Using FrontPage Express

2 Standard toolbars and menus
Opening the application opens a new page. Note the standard toolbars and menus. Time indicator: gives an approximation of download time of the page

3 Use the Insert, Table menu to insert a base table for the page layout.
Select the required numbers of Rows and Columns. Cell spacing adjusts the width of the space between the cells. Cell padding adjusts the space between the edge of the cell and the text. Select the width of the table: if this is not entered, the table will adjust according to the items in the cells and the window size of the browser.

4 The base table you have chosen is indicated by dotted lines.
This example has 2 rows and 3 columns. Each cell is used to contain an object: text, image, menu, etc. Emphasise the structure of the page: tables, paragraphs, menus. Use a table for positioning of page elements.

5 3. Use the drop down menu to format it as Heading 1.
1. Enter main title. 2. Highlight the text. 4. Centre the text if you wish. Add further text as required in relevant cells. Don’t format the text at this stage.

6 Pressing Return at the end of a line produces a new paragraph.
To move down one line, hold the CTRL key down and press Return. Include an image. Discuss, with reference to previous work, types of image format (gif, jpg) and their properties.

7 Enter text for hyperlinks. Highlight required text.
Use Insert, Hyperlink menu. Enter the required URL. Include an image. Discuss, with reference to previous work, types of image format (gif, jpg) and their properties.

8 To save the file, use the File, Save menu.
Click on Save As to save file in a specified folder. Enter a Page Title. NOTE: Web servers differ in the way they handle file names. To be safe always use: lower case letters and numbers only, no more than 8 letters and no spaces. Always specify .htm as the file name extension.

9 To insert images, use the Insert, Image menu and browse to the required image.
Note: Make sure that any images you want to use are saved in the same folder as the web page. FrontPage Express recognises only GIF and JPG files.

10 Use a right click on the image to call up image properties.
Always describe the image used.

11 Right click on the cell of a table to call up Cell Properties.
Change cell properties as required.

12 Apply your formatting by using style sheets.
Make sure these are in users’ folders before you start. Use View, HTML to view the HTML coding. Add the reference to the style sheet in the head section. Save and preview. Edit the style sheet as appropriate.
