Type of Blood in the Blood Bank at TMC
Making Predictions 1) Based on the data from Tucson Medical Center, find the probability of having each type. Type of Blood in the Blood Bank at TMC # of Units O+ 10 A+ 15 AB + B+ O- A- 12 B- 4 AB- Probability (fraction & percent) of having: O+ _________ A + _________ AB+ _________ B+ _________ O – _________ A – _________ B – _________ AB – _________

2) On an average 12-hour shift there are about 90 people who enter the emergency room at Tucson Medical Center (according to the lady Mrs. Sweet talked with yesterday.) Using the data above from the blood bank at TMC, how many of those people would you expect to be type O–? Probability (fraction & percent) of having: O+ _________ A + _________ AB+ _________ B+ _________ O – _________ A – _________ B – _________ AB – _________ 20 x 100 90 OR 15 76 90 x = 18 people with O– blood

Blood Types for U.S. (American Red Cross)
3) According to the American Red Cross probabilities, how many of the 90 emergency room patients would be predicted to have type O– blood? 7 x 100 90 x 6 people with O– blood
5
Why? Both problems wanted the number of people with O– blood if 90 people enter the emergency room. Why wouldn’t the two answers be the same?
6
Making Predictions cont.
4) Using the chart to the right, formulate a theory as to why the percent probability of O- blood from the American Red Cross chart (see #3) and the probability of O- blood at TMC (see #1) are so different. People with O– blood can donate to any of the other blood types. Since O– can be used in anybody, TMC wants to have extra of it around in case they run out of another type.
7
5) The American Red Cross also states that the probability of having any negative blood is The population of the Tucson metropolitan area is 1,010,025 people according to our Google search yesterday. How many people would you predict to have negative blood in the Tucson area? 16% 16 x (1,010,025) (1,010,025) 100 1,010,025 1 We would predict that Tucson has 161,604 people with O– blood.
8
We would expect that about 68,000 people donate AB– blood.
6) About 6.8 million people in the United States donate blood each year. How many of those people would you expect to have AB- blood? Blood Types for U.S. (American Red Cross) 6,800,000 1 x (6,800,000) (6,800,000) 100 6,800,000 1 We would expect that about 68,000 people donate AB– blood. That’s only about how many people live in the neighborhood!!

Type of Blood in the Blood Bank at TMC
7) Look back at #1 and see how much AB– blood TMC’s blood bank has. Why do you think that’s the case? (Hint…look at the chart in #6). Type of Blood in the Blood Bank at TMC # of Units O+ 10 A+ 15 AB + B+ O- A- 12 B- 4 AB- Blood Types for U.S. (American Red Cross) Since O– can be used in anybody, TMC plans on using that if anyone happens to need AB– blood since AB– blood is very unlikely to be needed (only 1% has that blood.)
10
Closure Write a summary statement about why TMC orders different amounts of each type of blood. Use at least one specific example from your data to support your statement.
