2 Let’s Review our Objective
PO: I can identify common themes in prose, poetry, and drama. LO: I will identify common themes in poetry by practicing with text. EQ: What is theme? How can you identify the themes in a piece of literature?

On your white boards please answer the following questions: What does the word theme mean to you? Where have you seen the word theme before?

5 Let’s Review Some of the Different Restaurant Themes That We have Seen..
On your white boards.. Create a list of all of the different restaurant themes that you can think of....

6 Definitions Theme - “The Big Idea” The underlying message
If you put this thing in a pile with other things like it, it is what you would call the pile In a story, it is the lesson the main character learns

7 How to Find Theme Ask yourself: What does the writer want me to learn?
Look for a lesson that a character learns.

8 Theme is Not!!! The main idea... It is so much more!!!
It is not a one word answer...

9 Theme is... The Bigger Picture... The major idea or lesson....
It is important to understand that different types of writing can contain more than one theme...

10 Before We Start Diving Into Literature...
Take a look at the following pictures and on your whiteboards, see if you can identify what the theme of the following bedrooms are.

16 Assignment Draw your bedroom and create a theme of your choice!!
Choose your topic and your theme. Use colors to help reinforce your theme and don’t forget about all of those important details that add to your theme. On the back of your picture, write a two buck summary about the theme of your room and why you chose this theme and topic for your bedroom.

17 Closing.. Buddy Buzz to your neighbor what theme is and the theme of your room.
