1 R12310: ME and ChemE Lab and Demo Hardware Development DPM – Spring 2012
“Hear it and forget it, See it and remember it, do it and understand it”

2 Presentation Outline Stakeholders Objective Trees
ME Department ChemE Department Customer Needs Assessment Function Tree

3 Stakeholders Dr. Hensel Mr. Landschoot Dr. Bailey Dr. Stevens
Dr. Schrlau Dr. Koppula Mr. Gregorius ME and ChemE Students

4 Objective Trees Affinity diagrams were used as the basis for development of objective trees. Split customer needs into two separate objective trees. ME department demos ChemE department laboratory hardware Based the split on the majority of customer feedback from each department.

5 Objective Tree – ME Department (Demos)

6 Objective Tree – ChemE Department (Labs)

7 Stakeholder Update- Assessing Customer Need Priorities
What did we do? We based priorities of customer needs using a scale system: 1 = Somewhat important 3 = Important 9 = Very important Sent out a Google doc survey to our customers Asked stakeholders to rate priority of needs (1-5, where 5 = most important) Updated priorities based on customer feedback Developed customer needs assessment table

8 How did our team rank the customer needs?

9 Example Google Doc Customer Needs Assessment Survey

10 Customer Needs Assessment

11 ME Demo Hardware Function Tree

12 ChemE Lab Hardware Function Tree

13 Team Concerns and Questions
A concern is that we are not sure if it would be possible to have a demo showing entropy. How would the design team measure an increase in understanding of entropy? Can you think of any requirements we are missing that are vital to a good lab/demo? Ideas for measuring increased student success?

14 Questions?
