Top Vent Outlet Connection Bottom-Up Burner Mounting Helps Keep Flue Gasses from Backing out at Shut-Down The Heating System Return water enters the boiler manifold and is directed to the upper secondary boiler loops where it meets the flue gasses that have already passed through the lower primary loops. Much of the flue gas condensation occurs in the upper chamber and flows down the condensate deflector, behind the lower chamber target wall and into the condensate drain collector bottle below. The condensate deflector directs the flue gasses from the lower chamber loops to the upper chamber loops and blocks the gasses from escaping directly to the vent connection. Full-Featured & Easy-To-Use Boiler Control with Plain English Text Display No Need to Memorize Codes Most Features are Pre-Programmed & Ready-to-go The PureFire Main Control is pre-wired with a total of 10 low-voltage and line-voltage connectors, all of which are designed to fit in only one location on the control. It is attached to one of two boiler panels (Left or Bottom Front) by 4 star-nuts. The PureFire Control Display has 5 function buttons: Reset; Menu/Return; Select, ▲(Up Arrow); and ▼(Down Arrow). The PB logo is not a button. There are only two Menus: User (with fairly limited functions) and Installer. Each menu has submenus with a ► (side arrow) next to one of the submenu choices. The ► (side arrow) can be moved up or down next to other menu choices by using the ▲(Up Arrow) or▼(Down Arrow). The sub-menus and menu items can be selected by pressing Select. If a menu item can be changed (for example Time & Date), press Select until the setting starts blinking then use the ▲(Up Arrow) or▼(Down Arrow) to change the setting until it is correct, then press Select to finalize the setting. To exit either Menu or to go back to a previous level in the Menu press Menu/Return . The User Menu is accessed by pressing Menu/Return. There are three sub-menus: Status, Settings and Messages. See the IOM for a list of User Menu functions. The Installer Menu is accessed by pressing and holding Menu/Return and Select together until the Installer Menu appears (about 5-10 seconds). There are six sub-menus: Status, Boiler Settings, CH Settings, DHW Settings, Service Notification and System Test. After May 2009 there are two more sub-menus: Cascade and Default. See the IOM for a list of Installer Menu functions.

Molded Plastic Jacket With Tinted Clear Lens for Viewing Control Display
The molded plastic jacket fits all sizes of PureFire Boilers from PF-50 through PF 399. It is attached to the sheet-metal panels on the front of the boiler with 6 ball studs and sockets. The black-tinted plastic lens with the PureFire logo provides protection to the control display and its buttons, although the pale blue light of the display is visible through the lens to indicate boiler power on. The lens is easily removable and replaceable to give ready access to the display as needed.

For Best Combustion results and most trouble-free operation the CO level should always be under 100 ppm in all conditions and should be set for the midpoint of the allowed CO2 range: 9% for Natural Gas and 10% for LP gas. Igniters & Flame Sensors Provide Dual Sensing of Burner Flame – Help Prevent Unnecessary Lockouts Dual Sensing – Flame sensor sends small electrical current through burner flame back to the ignition control. Control must read the correct signal to prove flame. After Ignitor has lit the burner and turned off, it also sends the same signal through the flame as a back up for the flame sensor. As long as the control reads the correct signal through the flame from either source it proves the flame and keeps the boiler from locking out.

Molded Plastic Vessels for Condensate Collection & Neutralizing
The Condensate Collector Vessel located at the back of the boiler under the heat exchanger receives the condensate from both the heat exchanger and the vent system. In the PF-50 through PF-140 there are separate condensate hoses for each. This Vessel has a float switch to shut off the boiler in the event that the condensate flow is blocked downstream. From this vessel the condensate flows to the Neutralizer Vessel in the front of the boiler. When the condensate level rises (in both Vessels) to the level of the Neutralizer Vessel Outlet, the condensate flows out through the fitting in the boiler jacket into the rest of the condensate drain system. All PureFire boilers are shipped with an initial supply of Neutralizer material (marble chips), which are designed to slowly dissolve into the condensate flowing through it, thereby reducing the acidity of the condensate, which is often required by local codes. The marble chips may last a few years depending on the operating temperature of the boiler, which affects the amount of condensate that is produced. Additional marble chips are available through Parts To Your Door or local suppliers. Optional for PF-210 & 399

Simplified Electrical Connections Pre-Wired Harnesses & Split Terminal Strips
The Factory Pre-Wired Harnesses feature a removable terminal strip that allows the installer more room to attach field wiring. Once all leads are connected to the terminal strips, they can be reattached to the harnesses. The terminal strip on the left of the wiring box is for all low voltage wires, including sensors and circuit switches. The terminal strip on the right of the wiring box is for all line voltage wires, including incoming power, circulator pump relays, etc. The two bottom terminals on the low-voltage harness is pre-wired with a jumper for test-firing the boiler. It should be removed before attaching the wires to the switch on the Low-Water Cut-Off (or Flow Switch) device. The green plastic plug with two wires in the wiring box is designed to be connected to an optional PureFire PC mouse for use with customer software. The PF-210 and PF-399 models have four more terminals than the PF-50 through PF-140 models for additional features.

Additional Features Leveling Legs Courtesy Outlet
All PureFire boilers are built with leveling legs to allow proper pitch of the boiler. Boilers should be level from side to side and pitched slightly back to direct all condensate inside the heat exchanger to the condensate drain. All PureFire boilers are built with a courtesy outlet, which is typically used to power a condensate pump or other accessory devices. The outlet power is always on whenever there is power to the boiler, even if the service switch on the boiler is turned off. This allows a service light to be used when inspecting a boiler that is turned off. It is important not to overdraw the power outlet with devices that are not related to the boiler. Features BE SURE TO USE ONLY PUREFIRE SENSORS AND REPAIR PARTS ON PUREFIRE BOILERS. Other repair parts and especially OTHER SENSORS (including Pinnacle Gas) may have different specifications which will not work properly, causing possible malfunctions and safety hazards. The Outdoor Sensor and two Knockout Grommets are provide with all PureFire Boilers. The Knockout Grommet protects the low-voltage wires from being cut or chafed on the steel edge of the knockout and helps seal the PureFire boiler jacket. All low-voltage wires can be routed through a single grommet (or two if needed.) In order for the OutDoor Reset (ODR) function of the PureFire control to work, the Outdoor Sensor (ODS) must be attached to an outdoor location, preferably on a North-facing wall out of direct sunlight. A wood screw and wall anchor are provided for attaching the ODS to a wall. Standard low voltage (18 gauge) thermostat wire can be wired from the terminals under the ODS cover to the ODS terminals on the left side of the PureFire wiring box. A hole can be punched through the rubber grommet on the ODS with a small nail, awl or screwdriver for the wires to pass through. By pressing the two small orange retaining clips inside the ODS the stripped wires will slide into the terminals. The ODS should always be installed with the rubber grommet facing down so that water such as from rain or melted snow won’t flow inside and short the sensor. If the ODR feature on the PureFire control is turned on and the ODS is not connected (or has a broken wire) the PureFire Display will blink continuously. To stop the Display from blinking, turn off the ODR feature in the PF control until the wires are reattached or repaired. Note that the PureFire System sensor looks similar to the ODS except that it has a spring clip and cable tip for attaching it to a pipe instead of a center hole, screw and wall anchor. Venting Options: PVC, CPVC & PP (M&G) with Stainless Steel, Concentric PVC & PP Termination Options
Standard Vent Terminations are a PVC Tee for Combustion Air Intake and a separate PVC Coupling for the Exhaust Vent. Both PVC fittings come with a heavy gauge wire varmint screen to prevent birds and rodents from entering the venting. See Venting instructions in PureFire IOM for proper vent and termination installation. Be sure to follow instructions and good venting practices to ensure trouble-free operation and avoid cross-contamination of the flue gasses into the combustion air.

Control Display Sample Screens
Boiler Control Display has 4 lines of 20 letters each to show what the boiler is doing and allow the user or installer to adjust settings. Standby means that the boiler has no call for heat or domestic hot water. The Control Display normally shows the current time (24-hour military format) and the boiler water supply temperature. The Control Display shows whether it’s in Central Heating mode or Domestic Hot Water Mode. The Trial For Ignition includes the blower pre-purge time, spark ignition and flame stabilization and proving time.

Control Display Sample Screens
During a normal call for Central Heating or DHW , the Control Display shows the burner input rate as a percentage: 1% is minimum input and 100% is maximum input. Once the boiler reaches the setpoint, the blower goes into post-purge, which is shown on the Control Display. If there is a call for Central Heating, but the boiler supply water is already at or above the setpoint, the burner will stay off and the circulator(s) will stay on until the supply water temperature drops below the setpoint minus the differential. For example, if the Central Heating setpoint is 120º because of Outdoor Reset and the boiler is at the end of a call for DHW and the supply water is near 180º, the boiler will wait until the supply water drops below 113º before firing the burner.

Control Features New or Enhanced in 2009 Feature Description Cascade
Multiple boilers operate together in order to satisfy the heating or DHW demand. One Hour Retry One hour after a lockout on ignition or flame failure, the PUREFIRE control will reinitiate boiler operation. Restore System Defaults Allows the installer to reset all parameters to the factory defaults if desired. The installer can also save and restore site defaults. Adjustable Blower Postpurge This feature allows the installer to increase the blower postpurge to counteract the effects of high winds or unusual wind currents. Flame Signal Log This troubleshooting tool captures the flame signal at four increments during the two second flame proving period. This can help installers/service personnel to quickly diagnose problems with flame rectifications. Fault History The PUREFIRE control allows service personnel to access the last 15 Blocking Errors and the last 15 Lockout Errors in addition to records of the interval between Errors.

Control Features Safety & Efficiency Feature Description
Freeze Protection Activates pumps if temperatures fall below the specified value. If the temperatures continue to fall, the boiler is activated. Ramp Delay Step Modulation This feature is used to prevent short cycling in systems using very small zones. The input rate is gradually increased from 20% to 100% over 2 minutes. When used, this only effects central heating operation. Add’l Safety Functions Allows the installer to choose between a low water cutoff and a flow switch for water level safety shutdown. Vent Temperature Safety Limit Reduces the firing rate if the vent temperature approaches the maximum limit of the vent material. If the vent temperature continues to climb, the PUREFIRE control will shut down the boiler. Service Notification If enabled, the PUREFIRE control will display a service notification after an installer defined number of hours or cycles. It can also display a notification based on a date of the installers choosing. System Test The PUREFIRE boiler will allow the installer to operate the boiler at low power, high power and ignition input for troubleshooting purposes.

Control Features Central Heating Feature Description Outdoor Reset
The PUREFIRE control changes the boiler supply target temperature to compensate for changes in load due to milder outdoor temperatures. This increases the efficiency of the boiler and is more comfortable. System Type Presets By choosing the heat distribution type (finned tube baseboard, hydro air, cast iron radiators, cast iron baseboard, low mass radiant or high mass radiant) the installer can automatically select practical boiler design and mild weather temperatures. Temperature Boost The temperature boost function increases the boiler supply target to recover more quickly from setback conditions. Warm Weather Shutdown The PUREFIRE control will shut down the boilers CH functions if the outdoor temperature is above an installer defined maximum. This prevents the boiler from running during warm weather. Anti-Cycling The anti-cycling function prevents rapid on/off cycling of the boiler. This includes an override function to be sure that all loads are satisfied. The Anti-Cycling feature will keep the PureFire from firing in Heating Mode for 3 minutes if it reaches its setpoint, unless the difference between the boiler heating setpoint and the boiler supply temperature measured by the supply sensor is more than 30º. The time cycle-off time (3 minutes) and the temperature difference (30º) can be adjusted or turned off by the installer.

Outdoor Reset In addition to Outdoor Reset Design (coldest) and Mild Weather setpoints, a Boiler Maximum and Boiler Minimum may be set. Boiler minimum is typically used with a HydroAir system where the boiler supply temperature to the HydroAir coil should be above 130º – 140º in order to avoid warm air that feels cold from coming off the coil. Even if the Outdoor Reset temperature calls for a lower temperature the setpoint will always target at or above the minimum. Boiler Maximum is typically used in a single temperature radiant system without DHW where too high a boiler supply temperature going directly to the radiant tubing could cause problems, such as damage to hardwood floors. Even if the Outdoor Reset temperature calls for a higher temperature the setpoint will always target at or below the maximum. It is important to note that the Temperature Boost Function of the PureFire Boiler starts adding to the ODR temperature which may be below the Boiler Minimum. In many cases it is a good idea to set the Mild Weather Supply temperature to the same number as the Boiler Minimum.

Central Heating Mode Choices

To turn on the standard OutDoor Reset (ODR) function, enter the CH Settings of the Installer Menu. The first sub-menu item is CH Mode and the default setting is 0. Press Select and Indoor Thermostat will begin blinking. Press ▲ (up arrow) once which will change CH Mode to 1 Thermostat and Outdoor Reset. Press Select to stop Thermostat and Outdoor Reset from blinking, which finalizes the selection. CH Modes 2-6 are not yet fully or rarely used.

Control Features Domestic Hot Water Feature Description
DHW Tank Warm Hold Prevents boiler from ramping up to high power if the DHW demand is only to keep the tank warm. Limited DHW Priority The PUREFIRE control provides DHW priority for boiler operation. However, the control will automatically switch between CH and DHW loads after an installer determined switch time. DHW Heat Dump If enabled, the DHW heat dump function serves to dump heat from the boiler system to the DHW tank after a CH demand has ended. The DHW Tank Warm Hold only works if DHW Mode is set to 1 (DHW Store with sensor). The boiler watches the DHW tank temperature constantly and can tell the difference between a quick drop in temperature indicating a demand (laundry, shower, etc.) and a slow drop in temperature over a few indicating standby loss. A DHW demand brings a full boiler response (usually full input to 180° setpoint.) A DHW standby loss brings a minimum boiler response (minimum input until tank temperature is restored.) If the boiler goes into DHW Tank Warm Hold then gets a demand, it will change over to full response immediately. Limited DHW Priority when there is a call for both Central Heating (CH) and DHW will give power to the DHW Circ Pump Relay and set the boiler setpoint for DHW for 30 minutes (which is adjustable in Priority Switch Time in the DHW Settings submenu). The CH demand would then get 30 minutes priority, and priority would switch back and forth as long as there is a demand for both CH and DHW. The DHW Circ Pump Relay and CH Circ Pump Relay will never be powered at the same time. DHW Priority is important when the boiler is not sized to always handle both DHW and CH at the same time. Proper boiler sizing is important for the most efficiency. Limiting DHW priority is useful in the case that the DHW circ pump fails. Not only would the DHW demand not be met but without a limit on DHW priority the lack of CH could cause the house to go cold and potentially freeze the pipes.

The PUREFIRE control modulates the boiler firing rate based on tank temperature. 2 DHW store with thermostat The domestic hot water tank is equipped with a thermostat. The PUREFIRE control responds to the demand from the thermostat and modulates the boiler firing rate targeting the DHW boiler setpoint To turn on one of the Domestic Hot Water functions, enter the DHW Settings of the Installer Menu. The first sub-menu item is DHW Mode and the default setting is 0. Press Select and No DHW will begin blinking. Press ▲ (up arrow) once which will change CH Mode to 1 DHW Store with sensor or press ▲ (up arrow) twice which will change CH Mode to 2 DHW Store with thermostat. Press Select to stop the selection from blinking, which finalizes the selection. Optional PureFire DHW sensors are available from Parts To Your Door that fit a variety of Indirect Water Hot Water heaters, especially the Peerless Partner. The DHW sensor is attached to over 24” of low-voltage wire, which can be connected with wire nuts to standard (18 gauge) thermostat wire and connected to the DHW sensor terminals on the left side of the PureFire wiring box. As an alternative a standard DHW thermostat, such as a Honeywell L4080B, can be used instead of the DHW sensor using the same wiring box terminals. The PureFire Main Control can tell the difference whether one or the other is connected; however if DHW store with sensor mode on the PureFire control is selected and the DHW sensor is not connected (or has a broken wire) the PureFire Display will blink continuously. To stop the Display from blinking, turn the DHW Mode in the PF control to 0 or 2 until the wires are reattached or repaired.

DHW or CH & DHW pump The General pump is on when the CH pump runs on CH demand. The DHW pump runs on DHW demand. Either the CH or DHW pump runs; they never run at the same time. A line voltage (120 VAC) 3-way valve is operated to supply water to the DHW tank. 2 Manifold with pump for DHW The General pump is always on when the burner is on. The CH pump runs on CH demand. Line Voltage Wiring – High Amp Circ Pumps
PureFire main control has a max amp draw of 5 amps including gas valve & other internal loads. Total amp draw of all operating Circulators must be less than about 4.5 amps. For example the General Circulator + the CH Circulator or the DHW circulator must be less than amps. If the circulator amp draw is higher than 4.5 amps, it must be isolated using a relay. A RIB2401B relay may be used for circulator motors up to 1 horsepower. The wiring schematic below shows how to wire isolation relays to the circulators.
