Introduction The accreditation of a program recognizes and acknowledges the value of transforming a student into a capable engineer with sound knowledge of fundamentals and an acceptable level of professional competence. In Bangladesh, the IEB constitution encompasses the accreditation of engineering programs within the country that award engineering degrees. Military Institute of Science and Technology (MIST)

The Council of IEB formed Board of Accreditation for Engineering and Technical Education (BAETE) BAETE as per IEB’s constitution, conducts the accreditation process and ensures the quality of engineering programs offered by institutions BAETE has adopted the Outcome-based Education (OBE) Manual of BAETE for the undergraduate programs is effective from 1 July 2017 Military Institute of Science and Technology (MIST)

Objectives of Accreditation To ensure that graduates acquire the attributes required to meet national and international standards To assist all stakeholders in identifying specific engineering education programs that meet national and international standards To provide a mechanism for the continual improvement of existing engineering programs through evaluation and feedback Military Institute of Science and Technology (MIST)

Sectoral Committees The Board constitutes Sectoral Committees for different engineering programs. Each committee consists of three members. The tenure of the Sectoral Committee is three years. A Sectoral Committee member may accompany the Evaluation Team for on-site moderation to ensure adherence to the BAETE manual. The relevant Sectoral Committee is responsible for scrutinizing the report submitted by the Evaluation Team. Military Institute of Science and Technology (MIST)

Appellate Committee If an institution is not satisfied with the accreditation decision of the Board, it may apply for a review of the decision by an Appellate Committee. The Appellate Committee is an independent committee consisting of three members, including the Chair. The tenure of the Appellate Committee is three years. Eligibility for Accreditation An engineering degree-awarding program approved by UGC. A duration of four years, after twelve years of schooling. At least one batch has graduated from the program. Follows outcome-based education. Requires a minimum of 130 total credit hours. (1 credit of lecture ≥ 750 minutes of formal contact) (1credit of lab ≥ 1500 minutes of formal contact) Military Institute of Science and Technology (MIST)

14 Accreditation Decision
Each criterion is judged in terms of : Compliance– satisfies requirement. No corrective measure needed Concern – Broadly in compliance but needs improvement to avoid potential non-compliance Weakness – Lacks strength of compliance. Requires corrective measures Deficiency – Does not exist or is in an elementary stage. Compliance is required The maximum accreditation period shall be six years if there is no deficiency and no weakness. Military Institute of Science and Technology (MIST)

15 Accreditation Decision
The Board may accredit a program for a shorter period if the program’s overall assessment is acceptable and it does not have weaknesses in more than three criteria. A program may not be accredited if any deficiency in any criterion is identified and the institution may reapply one year later after addressing the deficiencies and weaknesses. A program’s accreditation commences from the date its application is submitted to the BAETE. Military Institute of Science and Technology (MIST)

Deferment of Accreditation: May be deferred for 12 months Renewal An accredited program needs to reapply at least 6 months before the expiry of current accreditation. Application and evaluation processes for renewal are the same as the processes for new application. SAR needs to describe how shortcomings identified in the previous evaluation have been addressed, particularly through CQI. Failure to apply/reapply on time may lead to graduation of non-accredited batches. Military Institute of Science and Technology (MIST)

Major positions should be filled, and the statutory bodies/committees of the institution should be formed. Existence of and adherence to policies of service rules, academic rules, code of conduct, disciplinary code, recruitment and promotion policies, salary structure, leave rules, and scholarship and financial aid policies Grievance redress system Military Institute of Science and Technology (MIST)

The financial resources of the institution should be adequate to fulfill its mission and vision. Financial resources should be sufficient for the appropriate functioning of the program. Program Educational Objectives (PEOs) are broad statements that describe the career and professional accomplishments that the program is preparing graduates to achieve PEOs are assessable based on the attributes and accomplishments of graduates, 3 to 5 years after graduation The PEOs should be consistent with the vision and mission of the department PEO should be assessed and reviewed based on feedback from different stakeholders Military Institute of Science and Technology (MIST)

Criteria for Biomedical Engineering or Similar Program : The curriculum must prepare graduates with experience in the following: a. Applying the principles of engineering, biology, human physiology, chemistry , calculus-based physics, mathematics (through differential equations) and statistics b. Solving bio/biomedical engineering problems, including those associated with the interaction between living and non-living systems c. Analyzing, modeling, designing, and realizing bio/biomedical engineering devices, systems, components, or processes d.
