Enlightenment Defined
An 18th century philosophical movement of intellectuals who were greatly impressed with the achievements of the Scientific Revolution Mainly influenced by Englishmen Isaac Newton & John Locke

Identified 3 types of government Republic- for small states; a state in which supreme power is held by the people and their elected representatives, and which has an elected or nominated president rather than a monarch. Despotism- for large states; the exercise of absolute power, especially in a cruel and oppressive way such as in an absolutist state Monarchies- for moderate-sized states; a form of government with a monarch at the head Separation of powers Checks and balances
