What reforms begin to help people during the Industrial Revolution?

I. Abolition of Slavery A. Two groups during IR helped end slavery 1) Reformers: slavery was morally wrong 2) Business owners: cheap labor helps them make money and improves economy B. Abolition movement led by William Wilberforce (Brit. Parl.) British slavery ends in 1833 II. Labor Unions A. Voluntary associations known as labor unions form to improve working conditions B. Skilled workers led the way in forming unions since it was hard for management to replace these workers C. Gov’ts tried to outlaw unions, which caused more people to strike and join unions

III. Women’s Rights A. Although factories offered women independence, women only earned 1/3 of what men earned B. Many single mothers didn’t earn enough $ to help their family C. Jane Addams ran settlement housing programs for the poor & women (helps start women’s rights movement)
