What is Science? Intro Video
Science: Organized knowledge derived from observation, study, and experimentation The Scientific Check list: Focus on the natural world Tries to explain the natural world Ideas are TESTABLE!!!! Relies on EVIDENCE!!! Involves the Scientific community
2
TECHNOLOGY Technology is the application of science to meet human needs
3
Scientific Law vs. Scientific Theory
Scientific law: (old language) a summary of an observed natural event under specific conditions No explanation as to how or why Only applies under specific circumstances Ex: Newton’s Law of Universal Gravitation Scientific theory: a well tested, possible explanation of a natural event. The highest form of knowing! Is backed by a large volume of evidence! Ex: The theory of plate tectonics describes the features on Earth's surface and how they came to be
4
The Way Science Works… Observation vs. Inference
Observation: description of what you see, hear, taste, touch, smell Must use at least 1 of your senses Quantitative Observations: Numerical observations (measurements) Qualitative Observations: Non-numerical observations Example: Evidence shows that some dinosaurs had feathers Inference: A conclusion you draw as a result of an observation (not always correct!!) When we make inferences we are actually guessing. To be 100% sure about an inference more testing would be needed Example: All dinosaurs were feathered
5
Let’s do some observing!
6
What do you observe?
7
What part of the box is the circle on?
16
The first step is always CURIOSITY!!
The Scientific Method: A series of logical steps to follow in order to solve problems. The first step is always CURIOSITY!! FORMULATE A QUESTION (What is the Problem?) FORM A HYPOTHESIS (an educated guess) TEST HYPOTHESIS (DO Experiment) MAKE OBSERVATIONS (Record/Analyze data) DRAW CONCLUSIONS FORMULATE NEW QUESTIONS and CONTINUE CYCLE
17
The Scientific Method **Science IS A NEVER ENDING CYCLE!!!
*Based on a new observation *Was our hypothesis supported? Refuted? Need to be slightly modified and retested? *Notice anything unexpected? *An educated guess *Data tables, descriptions, graphs *Often but not always with an experiment **Science IS A NEVER ENDING CYCLE!!!

Which of the following statements is an inference?
The solution was bubbling. The solution had no odor. The solution had a dark color. The solution was Pepsi. The first three statements were gathered with the five senses. The final statement is an assumption based on what is known about the chemical reaction.
