WARM-UP [Write your name and answer on the PINK piece of paper, fold and put in box on projector] What happens twice in week, once in year, but never in day?
2
Periodic Table
3
Metals, Metalloids, Nonmetals
4
Metals: Good conductor of heat and electricity [allow heat or electricity to move through them] Malleable: Can be hammered into thin sheets Ductile: Can be pulled into thin wires Looks shiny (luster) Is solid at room temperature (except for Mercury)
5
Metalloids Has properties between metals and nonmetals
Are called semiconductors Are found along the stair step on the periodic table Aluminum and Polonium are considered metals
6
Nonmetals Poor conductor of heat and electricity
Exist in all three phases of matter at room temperature (most are gases) When solid, they are brittle (will shatter if hit)
7
Periodic Table Families
Alkali Metals Periodic Table Families Noble Gases Alkaline Earth Metals Halogens Transition Metals Lanthanides & Actinides (Inner Transition Metals)
