Chemical Change Chemical change - a change in matter that occurs when substances combine to form new substances. Eg. Wood burning and becoming ash See page 17 (c) McGraw Hill Ryerson 2007

Physical Change and Changes of State
- may be a change in appearance, but no new substances are formed. ie. ice melts, popping a balloon (c) McGraw Hill Ryerson 2007

Clues that a chemical change occurred:
1. New colour 2. Heat or light given off 3. Bubbles of gas may be formed 4. Solid material forms a liquid 5. Change is difficult to reverse (c) McGraw Hill Ryerson 2007
