But there are many others who are often ignored or forgotten

First Black girl to refuse to give up a seat on the bus
Was the inspiration from Rosa Parks, which was a planned protest
Story was buried by Civil rights movement because she was pregnant at 15.

5. Bayard Rustin Key Adviser to MLK
Was a leader in the fight for African-American rights and the LGBT community as an openly gay political activist
Helped plan the March on Washington

6. Malcolm X Also fought for Civil Rights but fought AGAINST Integration
Believed that Black were superior to all and should be separate from Whites
Also assassinated
Convert to Islam

7. Gloria Steinam
Leader of the Feminist movement: movement to bring equality to women and visibility to women’s specific issues.
Created the first feminist magazine: Ms.
Campaigned for women’s right to have an abortion, equal pay, and the Vietnam War

8. Harvey Milk
First openly gay person to hold public office in California
Helped pass many laws that advocated for the LGBT community in SF
Assassinated by another public official in broad daylight inside his office

9. Cesar Chavez Labor and civil rights leader
Campaigned for farm workers in California to be able to have a union and better working conditions (Filipinos, Latinos, and others)
Created the United Farm Workers Union, which still exists

10. Mary Crow Dog Lakota Native American activist
Wrote a book called “Lakota Woman” which highlights the living conditions of Native Americans in Indian reservations
Showed the abuse Native American schools put on children
Brought to light the FBI’s involvement in the persecution of Native Americans all the way through 1980’s
