1 How to Write a Paragraph
By: Mary S. Roland

2 What is a How-to-Paragraph?
A how to paragraph is a kind of narrative (story). It tells how to do a sequence of events. A paragraph must include the main idea and the topic sentence that expresses it. It must also include supporting details. Need an idea: Write about how to tie your shoe or build a birdhouse.

3 Step 1: (Think and Plan) Plan
Choose a thinking map (hint…a flow map would be great) Think of all the materials that will be needed Think of all the steps needed to complete the process Be sure your reader knows exactly what to do and when to do it. Use time-order words to make the sequence clear.

4 Step 2: Now write Write a topic sentence that names the project.
Write a detail sentence that tells what materials are needed. Write detailed sentences that clearly explain the steps in the process. Write time-order words to show the order of the steps.

5 What is a flow Map? First, Second, Then, Next, Finally, (conclusion)

6 It is easy… It is easy to make a seed mosaic. Just glue the seeds onto paper in an interesting pattern. First, you will need to collect seeds of different sizes, shapes, and colors. Then, draw a design on paper. Next, fill in sections of your drawing with glue and seeds. Don’t move the paper until the glue dries.

7 Your turn… Think of a project you want to tell your reader how to do.
Then, think of the materials needed to do the project. Write a list. Finally, write a rough draft of the steps needed to do the project.

8 Project Title Project:_______________________________
Materials needed: Steps to follow (flow map) Use time order words (to transition your paragraphs) First Second Third Then Next Finally
