THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD/APPROACH
CHAPTER 1.2 THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD/APPROACH
2
QUICK REVIEW - SCIENCE A system of knowledge and the methods you use to find that knowledge Branches: Chemistry, Physics, Earth, Biology What would you do if a light in your room didn’t turn on?
3
SCIENTIFIC METHOD / APPROACH
Scientific Method- what is it? An organized plan for gathering, organizing and communicating information How often do you use it? Examples
4
STEPS 1. Observation/Problem
2. Hypothesis- predict the outcome to your problem 3. Experiment- design a test Variables- factors that can be changed Independent – What I change Dependent – What I observe 2. Control- an unchanging variable, used for comparison Drawing Conclusions what are your results? Sharing data Conclusions- was your hypothesis accepted or rejected?
5
Why is it important to share data?
WHAT’S NEXT? Why is it important to share data? Hypothesis- the predicted outcome to a problem Theory – well tested explanation for set observations Same result from repeated experiments Examples: Law – well tested with unchanging results Will always predict what will happen in a situation
