Jesus’ Teaching On Servitude
Disciples thought in terms of a hierarchy (Lk 9:46) Leaders and followers are a feature of human nature His disciples needed to be taught We need to learn also

This event is late in the ministry of Jesus (third year) Verses 20-21: which will be greatest? Verses 22-23: they think they will have such a choice, but they don’t Verse 24: Is this jealousy? Verses 25-28: The servant is greatest when he serves

Jesus’ Example As A Servant
He took the ultimate step of servitude (2 Cor. 8:9; Phil. 2:5-8) He illustrated (literally) with a practical example of servitude for disciples’ benefit (Jn. 13:1-17, especially vv which are the key to this account)

Additional Points Serve everyone like it is service to the Lord (Eph. 6:7) Paul being “every man” (1 Cor. 9:19-23) Key to service (Phil. 2:3-4; Jesus as the example, 2:5ff) That cup of cold water (Matt. 10:42) There is no such thing as service that is too insignificant God sees even the smallest
