1 WALT: about the Digestive system

2 Cells to organs to systems
Specialised cells Tissue Organ System

3 Step-by-step Firstly the food enters the mouth and is mechanically chewed. This is then swallowed. The food passes into the oesophagus where it is squeezed down to the stomach.

4 3) In the stomach the food mixes with hydrochloric acid (HCl) which destroys microbes. The food also mixes with enzymes which breakdown food into small molecules. 4) The broth (nutrient) is passed onto the small intestines where useful small molecules are absorbed into the bloodstream.

5 5) Waste products pass to the large intestines where valuable water is reabsorbed.
6) All of the waste passes onto the rectum. It is stored here until it is released out of the anus.

6 Mechanical digestion Food is firstly broken down (mechanical breakdown) into smaller parts by the teeth in the mouth. It is then mixed with saliva and swallowed.

7 The stomach Food enters the stomach, which is basically a muscular bag, filled with hydrochloric acid (HCl). Two things happen here: Chemical breakdown of the food. Microbes are destroyed. food enters from the gullet cross section of stomach digested food leaves muscle tissue

8 The small intestine Food enters the small intestine from the stomach. It passes along the small intestine where the soluble food is taken into the blood through the walls.

9 The large intestine The remains of the food are then passed on to large intestine (colon). All that is left is waste material and water. The body will want to leave the waste material within the digestive system but the water is valuable and so it is re-absorbed here. The waste material is passed to the rectum where it is stored until it leaves the body through the anus.

10 Once the small food molecules have entered the bloodstream they are carried to the cells all over the body.

11 Food contains ________ which our bodies needed for growth and _______.
Please complete this exercise using the words from the word bank to help you. Food contains ________ which our bodies needed for growth and _______. When food enters the _______ it is chewed __________. When it enters the stomach it mixes with ___________ ______, which destroys _________. The _____ molecules then enter the bloodstream and are carried to every _____ in the body. Hydrochloric acid nutrients repair mouth microbes cell mechanically
