20 But you did not learn Christ in this way,
21 if indeed you have heard Him and have been taught in Him, just as truth is in Jesus, 22 that, in reference to your former manner of life, you lay aside the old self, which is being corrupted in accordance with the lusts of deceit, 23 and that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind, 24 and put on the new self, which in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth.

20 But you did not learn Christ in this way,
you – humeis – lit: as for you (emphatic pronoun you) marks off a contrast with the unsaved Gentiles But as for you, not thus did you learn the Christ (Wuest) “did not learn” is the main verb and is a past point fact for the believer learn - manthanō - said of "learning" Christ, Eph. 4:20, not simply the doctrine of Christ, but Christ Himself, a process not merely of getting to know the person but of so applying the knowledge as to walk differently from the rest of the Gentiles; Vine the Christ – the very person of Christ and this is to continue in our walk – 2 Pet 3:18, Col 2:6

21 if indeed you have heard Him and have been taught in Him, just as truth is in Jesus,
if indeed - lit: if as is the case (assumed to be true) 1st - you have heard Him have heard – to hear, to understand, comprehend – a past point fact in this verse; Col 1:5, Rom 10:14 2nd - (you) have been taught in Him have been taught - teach, instruct by word of mouth; Col 2:7 a past point fact in the passive voice you have been taught in the past and continue to be taught in present as we walk by faith this teaching is “in Him” (in your living union with Him)

21 if indeed you have heard Him and have been taught in Him, just as truth is in Jesus,
is - eimi – the state in which someone or something continuously exist Christ is the truth and continuously exists as the truth other verses: John 14:6 Jesus said to him, I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me. John 1:14 And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth. John 17:17 Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth.

22 that, in reference to your former manner of life, you lay aside the old self, which is being corrupted in accordance with the lusts of deceit, that, in reference to your former manner of life in reference - as concerning former - proteros - before or former - see Heb. 10:32; 1 Pet. 1:14 manner of life - anastrophe - a turning about; in the NT - mode of life, conduct, behavior see Gal 1:13 this seems to refer back to Eph 4:17-19

22 that, in reference to your former manner of life, you lay aside the old self, which is being corrupted in accordance with the lusts of deceit, imperative (command) translation*: you lay aside (put off) the old self (man) indicative (statement of fact) translation*: you have put off the old man (Wallace) you have put off once for all --- the old self (man) (Wuest) That this is not a command for these saints to do something which was not yet accomplished is seen when two other passages (Rom 6:6 & Col 3:9) are examined along with this. Chafer * D. Wallace “Greek Grammar Beyond the Basics”

22 that, in reference to your former manner of life, you lay aside the old self, which is being corrupted in accordance with the lusts of deceit, Rom 6:6 knowing this experientially, that our old self (man) was crucified once for all with Him in order that the physical body dominated by the sinful nature might be rendered inoperative, with the result that no longer are we rendering a slave's habitual obedience to the sinful nature, (WuestNT) Col 3:9 Do not lie to one another, since you (have) laid aside the old self (man) with its evil practices, This is how God’s grace operates! It is because the old man had been put off that they were to abstain from their former evil ways, rather than that by abstaining from evil ways the old man might be put off. Chafer

22 that, in reference to your former manner of life, you lay aside the old self, which is being corrupted in accordance with the lusts of deceit, This is what the old man is like and it cannot be reformed! which is being corrupted lit: the one being corrupted being corrupted - phtheirō - signifies to destroy by means of corrupting, and so bringing into a worse state; in accordance with the lusts of deceit lusts epithymia - denotes strong desire of any kind -Gal 5:16,Eph 2:3 deceit - apatē - deceit or deceitfulness" (akin to apataō, "to cheat, deceive, beguile"), that which gives a false impression, in Eph 4:22 it signifies lusts excited by deceit
11
23 and that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind,
lit: you are being constantly renewed (present tense) renewed - anakainoō - to make new (ana: back or again; kainos: new – new in quality not time - passive voice in the spirit of your mind The renewal takes place, not in the mind, but in the spirit of it. Wuest Gal 5:16 But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh. parallel verse in the passive voice: 2 Cor 4: but though our outer man is decaying, yet our inner man is being renewed day by day.
12
24 and put on the new self, which in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth. and put on the new self (man) you have put on once for all the new man (Wuest) new - is kainos, not new in point of time, which would be neos, but new in point of quality Col 3:10 and have put on the new self (man) who is being renewed to a true knowledge according to the image of the One who created him— 2 Cor 5:17 Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.

The wonderful attributes of the new man!
