Diversity Policy Baylor College of Medicine fosters diversity among its students, trainees, faculty and staff as a prerequisite to accomplishing our institutional mission, and setting standards for excellence in training healthcare providers, promoting scientific innovation, and providing patient-centered care. Diversity, respect, and inclusiveness create an environment that is conducive to academic excellence, and strengthens our institution by increasing talent, encouraging creativity, and ensuring a broader perspective. Diversity helps position Baylor to reduce disparities in health and healthcare access and to better address the needs of the community we serve. Baylor is committed to recruiting and retaining outstanding students, trainees, faculty and staff from diverse backgrounds by providing a welcoming, supportive learning environment for all members of the Baylor community. Baylor’s mission-appropriate diversity groups include women, Hispanic/Latinos, and Black/African Americans for students, faculty and senior administrative staff.

What Is The Promotions Process?
Baylor has two “tracks” (tenure and non-tenure) All appointments and promotions at the Associate Professor level and above are approved at an institutional level. Process is initiated by department Chair Faculty Appointments and Promotions Committee Academic Council (approval) Board of Trustees (final action) Tenure = Expectation of continued appointment as long as duties are satisfactorily fulfilled.
15
Your Areas of Excellence
Most faculty members develop strength in a primary and at least one secondary area of excellence. Examples Research and education (basic sciences investigator who works with graduate students or provides course instruction) Research and patient care (clinician who conducts basic or translational research) Patient care and education (clinician who works with students, residents or fellows) Patient Care Single Mission Pathway (non-tenure track) for clinicians >80% patient care; requires clinical excellence plus excellence in leadership, quality and safety, business development or recognized clinical expertise.
16
Faculty Advancement Areas of excellence (research, education and patient care) have different expectations and requirements. Awards help document excellence. Education (Norton, Rose, Fulbright Faculty Excellence Awards) Patient Care (Early Career, Star and Master Clinician Awards) Scholarship and service are important.

Strategies for Success
Build your network of internal and external colleagues. Keep in mind that you may have several mentors and guides (clinical practice, research, work/life balance). Ask for guidance or assistance when appropriate. Learn about what is expected of faculty members in your area, field or discipline—so that you can build your expertise and document your contributions. Use your annual faculty evaluation to discuss your goals and a timeframe with your supervisor.
