3. Timeline and History
1900 Founded as the University of Dallas Medical Department.
Became affiliated with Baylor University.
Joined the newly formed Texas Medical Center in Houston.
1948 Michael E. DeBakey, MD, joined the faculty as Chair of Surgery.
1949 Established the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences.
1969 Separated from Baylor University by mutual agreement to become an independent institution.

7. Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center
Private Adult Hospital
Jointly owned and operated private adult teaching hospital, part of the CHI St. Luke’s Health system.
Medical staff includes full- time Baylor faculty, as well as community physicians.
New McNair campus hospital.
Outpatient component, which Baylor owns and operates independently.

14. What Is The Promotions Process?
Baylor has two “tracks” (tenure and non-tenure)
All appointments and promotions at the Associate Professor level and above are approved at an institutional level.
Process is initiated by department Chair
Faculty Appointments and Promotions Committee Academic Council (approval)
Board of Trustees (final action)
Tenure = Expectation of continued appointment as long as duties are satisfactorily fulfilled.

15. Your Areas of Excellence
Most faculty members develop strength in a primary and at least one secondary area of excellence.
Examples
Research and education (basic sciences investigator who works with graduate students or provides course instruction)
Research and patient care (clinician who conducts basic or translational research)
Patient care and education (clinician who works with students, residents or fellows)
Patient Care Single Mission Pathway (non-tenure track) for clinicians >80% patient care; requires clinical excellence plus excellence in leadership, quality and safety, business development or recognized clinical expertise.

Build your network of internal and external colleagues.

Ask for guidance or assistance when appropriate.
Learn about what is expected of faculty members in your area, field or discipline—so that you can build your expertise and document your contributions.
Use your annual faculty evaluation to discuss your goals and a timeframe with your supervisor.
