Glazing Procedures
2
1.Choose your colors from the “glaze board,” NOT from the way they look in the bottle.
Glaze goes through a chemical change in the firing. It is basically brought to it’s melting point and moves from a mixture of dry materials to glass
3
2. Always stir glazes before use
Glaze should be the consistency of a milkshake or thick cream. Watery glazes will take more coats and may not form correctly in the firing
4
3. Brush on 3 thick, even coats
If you are pouring the inside of a pot, only one coat is necessary.
5
4. Vary the direction you brush to get even coverage.
Coat 1: Vertical stroke Coat 2: Horizontal stroke Coat 3: Diagonal stroke
6
5. Sponge off mistakes—do not scrape
Mistakes cannot be covered up with another color like paint
7
6. Clean off bottoms of each piece
Anytime glaze is on the area that touches a kiln shelf it will melt right to the shelf
8
7. Clean-up Procedures Wipe outside of glaze bottle well with sponge
MAKE SURE LIDS ARE ON ALL OF THE WAY Rinse sponges well Clean mixing tools well
