4 *CALL TO WORSHIP AND INVOCATION
L: Sisters and Brothers, blessed are those who trust God, whose trust is our Lord. P: They are like trees planted by water, sending out roots by the stream.

5 L: They have no fear of summer’s heat, nor do they wither in the sun
L: They have no fear of summer’s heat, nor do they wither in the sun. P: In the year of drought they are not anxious, for their lives bear the fruit.

6 L: Friends, come to the waters of life and trust in the Lord
L: Friends, come to the waters of life and trust in the Lord. P: We have come to worship and to send our roots into streams of God’s living water!

7 *HYMN #263 “Immortal, Invisible God Only Wise” v.1
Immortal, invisible, God only wise, In light inaccessible hid from our eyes, Most blessed, most glorious, the Ancient of Days, Almighty, victorious, Thy great name we praise.

8 *HYMN #263 “Immortal, Invisible God Only Wise” v.2
Unresting, unhasting, and silent as light, Nor wanting, nor wasting, Thou rulest in might; Thy justice like mountains high soaring above Thy clouds, which are fountains of goodness and love.

9 *HYMN #263 “Immortal, Invisible God Only Wise” v.3
To all, life Thou givest, to both great and small; In all life Thou livest, the true life of all; We blossom and flourish like leaves on the tree, Then wither and perish; but naught changeth Thee.

10 *HYMN #263 “Immortal, Invisible God Only Wise” v.4
Thou reignest in glory, Thou rulest in light, Thine angels adore Thee, all veiling their sight; All praise we would render, O help us to see ‘Tis only the splendor of light hideth Thee!

11 *PRAYER OF CONFESSION Gentle guide and Loving God, heal our dry and foolish behaviors. We want to ignore the advice of the mischievous and the paths of sin, but our speech and actions often betray us.

12 We yearn to be like trees planted beside living waters, bearing fruit of goodness, but temptation snags us and dries our souls like shrubs in the desert.

13 Our hearts seek the ways of your Spirit and the waters of life, but our footsteps lead us into arid, desert sands of sin and death. We know this is not your hope and plan for us. Forgive us.

14 Turn us again to the healing you so freely offer, and mend the brokenness in our lives and the brokenness we bring into our world. Amen.

15 ASSURANCE OF PARDON L: God looks at us in our brokenness, and offers blessings to all who turn to the Lord. With the assurance of God’s faithful love, choose this day to be people of blessing.

16 P: Thanks be to God for allowing us to drink deeply from her love and forgiveness. Amen, and amen.

18 Time With Young Christians

19 PROCLAIMING THE WORD SCRIPTURE READING: Luke 6:17-26

20 He came down with them and stood on a level place, with a great crowd of his disciples and a great multitude of people from all Judea, Jerusalem, and the coast of Tyre and Sidon. They had come to hear him and to be healed of their diseases; and those who were troubled with unclean spirits were cured.

21 And all in the crowd were trying to touch him, for power came out from him and healed all of them. Then he looked up at his disciples and said, ‘Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you will be filled.

22 Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh
Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh. Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude you, revile you, and defame you on account of the Son of Man. Rejoice on that day and leap for joy, for surely your reward is great in heaven; for that is what their ancestors did to the prophets.

23 But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your consolation
But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your consolation. Woe to you who are full now, for you will be hungry. Woe to you who are laughing now, for you will mourn and weep. Woe to you when all speak well of you, for that is what their ancestors did to the false prophets.

24 SCRIPTURE READING: Jeremiah 17:5-10

25 Thus says the Lord: Cursed are those who trust in mere mortals and make mere flesh their strength, whose hearts turn away from the Lord. They shall be like a shrub in the desert, and shall not see when relief comes. They shall live in the parched places of the wilderness, in an uninhabited salt land.

26 Blessed are those who trust in the Lord, whose trust is in the Lord
Blessed are those who trust in the Lord, whose trust is in the Lord. They shall be like a tree planted by water, sending out its roots by the stream. It shall not fear when heat comes, and its leaves shall stay green; in the year of drought it is not anxious, and it does not cease to bear fruit.

27 The heart is devious above all else; it is perverse – who can understand it? I the Lord test the mind and search the heart, to give to all according to their ways, according to the fruit of their doings. L: This is the Word of the Lord. P: Thanks be to God!
