Step 1: Listen (Partner Work)
Take turns QUIETLY reading your essays to one another. Read each sentence in the order it appears on the handout from class yesterday—skipping the prompts and reading only what your partner has written. As you listen to your writing, listen for areas where you may not have effectively communicated what you were trying to say—areas that “just don’t sound right.”
6
Step 2: Assess (Partner Work)
Now that you have both HEARD what your writing sounds like, use the statements below to assess the effectiveness of your writing. Rate the accuracy of each statement on a scale of 1 to 5 with 1 meaning the writer did NOT accomplish this goal and 5 meaning the writer did a PHENOMENAL job of accomplishing this goal. The writing clearly communicates his or her claims COHERENTLY—the writing MAKES SENSE. The writer answered the prompt THOROUGHLY. The writing reflects accurate analysis of the texts. The writer used sufficient evidence to support his or her claims. The writer INTRODUCED quotes rather than just writing the words from the texts without giving credit to their writers. Step 2: Assess (Partner Work)

Step 3: A look at transitions
It is hard to find good movies to watch in the cinemas these days. The price of a ticket is so expensive. The price for two tickets and popcorn can sometimes be more expensive than dinner in a restaurant. The cost to rent DVDs has increased over the years. The price of print books has risen at a slower rate. I don’t watch movies very much anymore. I used to see movies in the cinema regularly. The industry is no longer sustainable because people like me no longer pay. I prefer to read. Take a look at the paragraph to the right. What would you criticize about this paragraph? watch?v=SMhLlnES28A

Now that you’ve gotten some feedback and seen some areas where you can make improvements to your writing, you can begin transferring your outline sentences to actual notebook paper! Reminders: Use an MLA heading (see the sign behind Mrs. Thomas’ desk for a reference) USE TRANSITIONS! Periodically read your writing back to yourself silently to monitor coherence. Step 4: Independent Work (You have the rest of the class period to work on your essay. If you do not finish…it is homework!)
