1 Writing for Social sciences
Writing Wednesday!!! Writing for Social sciences

2 Your Thesis A thesis statement should state a clear position (For example: Although the Committee of Public Safety intended to protect the French Revolution from its enemies, the laws they passed ended up doing more harm than good.) DO NOT WRITE “In my opinion…” “I think…” “I believe…” THESE STATEMENTS ARE OBVIOUS, SINCE YOU ARE THE AUTHOR.

3 Cite Evidence Your paragraph should REFER (quote, paraphrase in your own words) to TWO pieces of evidence, and IDENTIFY the source for each. For Example: The “Law of Suspects” gave the Committee the power to immediately arrest anyone who was even suspected of being opposed to the Revolution.

4 Offer Commentary (Analysis)
Your paragraph must include commentary (analysis) on BOTH pieces of evidence you present. For Example: The widespread arrests that took place during the Reign of Terror frightened the people who originally supported the Revolution.

5 Conclusion Your paragraph must include a CONCLUSION, which sums everything up and refers back to your thesis statement. For Example: By passing laws that punished and intimidated their followers, the Committee of Public Safety actually ended up harming the goals of the French Revolution.
