Southeast Asia can be broken up into two major sections:
Mainland = includes Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, Myanmar (Burma), and West Malaysia
Maritime = includes Andaman and Nicobar islands of India, Indonesia, East Malaysia, Singapore, Philippines, East Timor, Brunei, Christmas Island, Keeling (Cocos) Islands, and Taiwan

3. Geography Southeast Asia lies along tectonic plates
TONS of volcanic and earthquake activity (including tsunamis)
Two plates meet in Indonesia so it is one of the most geologically active regions in the world

4. Climate
The climate in Southeast Asia is mostly humid tropical/humid subtropical with plenty of rainfall
The seasons change in predictable wind shifts and monsoons
The rainforest areas are the second largest in the world

5. Demographics Around 642 million people live in Southeast Asia
More than 1/5th live on the Indonesian island of Java
Indonesia is the 4th most populated country in the world
About 8.5% of the world’s population lives in SE Asia

7. Religion By population, Islam is the most practiced faith in SE Asia
Around 40% of the world’s Muslim population lives in Indonesia, Brunei, Malaysia, Southern Thailand and the Southern Philippines
Christianity (esp. Catholicism) is most prevalent in the Philippines, eastern Indonesia, East Malaysia, and East Timor
Buddhism is practiced in Vietnam, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Burma and Singapore

8. ASEAN
Ten countries make up ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations)
ASEAN is a regional organization designed to establish economic, political, military, educational, and cultural exchanges between nations
Created on August 8th, 1967
Created by a common fear of communism, it eventually allowed Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia and Myanmar (Burma) into the group by the mid-90s
ASEAN Plus Three = includes China, Japan and South Korea
The region became nuclear-free on June 21st, 2001
