Language that uses figures of speech to create images of what something looks, sounds, or feels like. Authors use figurative language to make unfamiliar objects, settings, and situations more relatable. Figures of speech can increase effectiveness, persuasiveness, and impact in a text. Figurative Language

Types of Figurative Language
Metaphor: A comparison between two different things that does NOT use “like” or “as” Simile: A comparison between two different things, using the words “like” or “as” Personification: Figure of speech in which a thing, an idea, or an animal is given human-like qualities Allusion: A brief and indirect reference to a person, place, thing, or idea of historical, cultural, literary or political importance Alliteration: Device in which several words, having the same first consonant sound, occur close together in a series Types of Figurative Language

Tone Refers to “tone of voice” Conveys feelings
The feelings a narrator has toward a certain character or subject in the story Tone

Word Choice Word choice affect the tone of a story.
Connotation refers to the ideas or feelings that certain words make readers think or feel. Denotation refers only to the literal meaning of words. Word Choice
