The Syllable A study of syllable structure considers the phonological distribution of sounds and is part of a study called phonotactics. A unit of production uttered without interruption, forming the whole or part of a word and comprising a sound of greater sonority (vowel) with or without one or more sounds of less sonority (consonants) before or after. (The New Shorter Oxford English Dictionary). What is a syllable?
