7. How is breathing regulated?
It is regulated by the amount of carbon dioxide in the body. The more carbon dioxide, the faster the brain tells your body to breathe.

8. What effects does smoking have on the respiratory system?
The chemicals in cigarettes cause the cell lining on the bronchi to become irritated and destroy the cilia. This leaves the lungs more susceptible to other diseases in the air.

Asthma-inflammation and narrowing of airways
Emphysema-caused by smoking, could require lung transplant.
Pneumonia-lung infection, last 2-3 weeks, coughing and fever.
