1 Spectroscopy of Various Metals
CHEMISTRY PROCEDURE Obtained spectral lines by burning metals with a butane torch. Electrons in the metals are excited by the heat and then fall back to a lower energy level, emitting a photon. Photons dispersed by a grating and detected by the CCD to give a spectrum Mg +½O2 → MgO heat Mg + heat → Mg*(g)→ Mg(g)+ n LiCl(s) → Li+(g) + e → Li*(g) → Li(g)+ n NaCl(s) → Na+(g) + e → Na*(g) → Na(g)+ n RESULTS Magnesium Most interesting spectrum & burned bright white Blackbody & sharp peaks. Peaks from electronic transitions LiCl Beautiful crimson Sharp line at ~670 nm Did not ignite, just excited by the flame NaCl orange-red color Sharp line ~590 nm Na doublet) Did not ignite, just excited by the flame
