Unit 5/ #1 To what extent does visual art influence one’s emotion?
RLS: Pixar short film Bao WOK: Emotion AOK: The Arts To what extent does visual art influence one’s emotion?
3
Objective “I can support my understanding of emotion with the ideas of other people.”
4
Warm Up Questions What do you think the role of emotion is in helping us to figure out the world? Can we trust emotion to provide us with reliable knowledge?
5
Primary emotions Psychologists distinguish six primary emotions:
happiness, sadness, fear, anger, surprise and disgust.
6
What are emotions all about? Where do they come from?
Are emotions physical or mental? Which AOK would provide us with the most reliable knowledge about emotion?
7
Can you recognize these emotions on the faces below?
8
Other Emtions Are emotions universal?
Which other, perhaps more complex, emotions can you think of? Are your emotions innate or rather a product of the knowledge community you belong too? Are emotions universal?
9
Class Discussion If some similarities exist between the structure and movement of facial muscles in humans and non-human mammals, could this mean that animals express and feel emotion in the same way that humans do? Researchers have tested the universality of expression by studying the expression of emotion in people who are born blind and in people from remote tribes. Are there any other particular groups that researchers could study to provide further evidence of universality?
10
Emotion How do we recognize and categorize emotions?
11
Emotion Willam James and Carl Lange came up with the James-Lange Theory of Emotion. We feel emotion because of biological changes caused by stress. The body changes and our mind recognizes the feeling.
12
Cannon-Bard Theory of Emotion
Says James-Lange theory is full of crap. How can that be true if similar physiological changes correspond with drastically different emotional states. The physiological change and cognitive awareness must occur simultaneously. They believed it was the thalamus that helped this happen.
13
Two-Factor Theory of Emotion
Stanley Schachter explains emotions more completely that the other two theories. They happen at the same time but… People who are already physiologically aroused experience more intense emotions than unaroused people when both groups are exposed to the same stimuli. Biology and Cognition interact with each other to increase the experience.
14
What is the importance of emotion in human interaction?
What are the dangers of emotion? Is the less emotional person a happier person than an emotional one? What would it be like to never have felt an emotion?
15
RLS Group Work 1.Outline of the RLS (real life situation) 2 points
2. Consideration of other WOKs and AOKs, such as language and ethics (how does emotion help us to understand linguistic concepts; how is our ethical awareness affected by a lack of emotion, etc.) (2 points) Example: Are emotions simply a matter of physicality or does the mental component play a role as well? 3. Identification of a KQ (knowledge question) related to this RLS. (2 points) 4. Discussion of the KQ with further reference to the RLS using claims and counter claims ( 2 points) 5. Conclusion, summarize main points (2 points) Present by the end of class (chosen at random to present) 10 points for quiz

Other people on emotion
Visit the quotes page for emotion in theoryofknowledge.net. What do they reveal about: The extent to which emotion provides us with ‘true’ knowledge Whether language can truly convey what emotion is The relative importance of emotion and reason The relationship between the arts and emotion The importance of emotion in helping us to gain ethical knowledge
21
Development of ideas Pick out one 2 quotes that particularly surprises you – What insight into emotion does it provide you with? Who said it, and what was their background?
22
Exit Have the quotes made you rethink your initial ideas on the role of emotion in providing us with knowledge?
