Make sure you are thorough and detailed in your explanation (say more than you think you need to say) Remember that the people you are explaining your article to have not read it, but they will be assessed on the information

What is a Caliph, who was the first Caliph? What challenges did Abu Bakr have when he became the first Caliph, how did he begin to build an empire? What was the course that the first 4 Caliphs took in order to unite the Middle East, where did they go next? Explain the differences between Shiites and Sunnis, be extremely detailed in your description. Research and explain what an Imam is. What are Sufis’, what can you compare them to? When the Muslims’ expand how far into Europe and India do they get, how could this be influential to other peoples? According to your text, how were the Muslims able to have so much success expanding the Umayyad empire? Were Muslims tolerant toward Jews and Christians after Umayyad Empire conquered them? Explain in detail. What was the downfall of the Umayyad Empire? Consider economics, geography, dissention amongst non Muslims. Who was Abu al-Abbas? Explain his contributions to Islam. How did Muslims impact Spain? How did the Turks and Genghis Khan impact Muslims?

Explain the impact of the “Ships of the Desert.” Be detailed in your description. How did take advantage of geography and traded goods to support their empires? Hint* Agriculture and manufactured goods Explain the social structure in the Muslim empires of the 8th and 9th centuries. Explain why Muslim art has a “distinctive style,” and how this style could impact Islamic culture. Explain the impact of poetry and storytelling on Muslim culture. Is Muslim architecture unique? If so, explain why and how. How valuable was knowledge to ancient Muslims? Explain, consider Baghdad, philosophy, history, astronomy, mathematics, and Medicine.
