Objective: To simplify expressions involving exponents
Ch 1.2 – Exponents & Powers Objective: To simplify expressions involving exponents
2
Definitions Base The foundation of an expression that is raised to a power is known as the base. Exponent An exponent represents the number of times an expression is multiplied by itself and is written in superscript. For example: In the expression “(5x)2”, 5x is the base and 2 is the exponent.
3
Objective- To simplify expressions involving exponents
Base Write the following using exponents. 1) 3) 4 7 5 10 2) 4) 2 3 (-3) -12
4
Write in words how each expression should be read.
1) “Four to the third power” or “Four cubed” 2) “Eight squared” 3) “Negative seven to the fourth power” 4) “The opposite of six to the fifth power”
5
(3)(3)(3) - (4 ) (4 ) (-7)(-7)(-7)(-7) (-1)(3)(y)(y) -1 7 7 7 7
Write the following expression without using exponents. Do not simplify. 1) “Three cubed” (3)(3)(3) 2) “The opposite of four and one-third squared” - (4 ) 1 (4 ) 1 3 3 3) 6) (-7)(-7)(-7)(-7) (-1)(3)(y)(y) 4) 7) 7 (-3y)(-3y) 5) 8) (5y)(5y) (x + 8)(x + 8)
