APES 10/20 Did you share or turn in your ecocolumn reflection with me?
2
Latent heat release: as water molecules condense, the extra energy leaves as heat
Adiabatic heating Adiabatic cooling
3
Why Convection Happens
Warm surfaces create low air pressure, as the molecules get excited and spread out. Cold areas have higher air pressure because the molecules are more densely packed As low pressure, warm air rises, cold dense air takes its place.
4
Why Convection Happens
Bodies of water hold heat better, so they often have dense, colder air Land gives off heat faster, so it has the less dense, warmer air Pacific NW: Cool, denser air from the Pacific replaces warm air coming off the land
5
Practice With Convection
You need: five cups, pieces of cardboard, plastic bin, red food coloring, pipette, blue ice cube, plastic spoon
6
Air and Ocean Currents We know that convection cells in the atmosphere, along with the Coriolis Effect, cause air current/prevailing winds. How does this affect the ocean?

Due Tuesday Modules 9-11 Field Trip Form
Wear closed-toed shoes, bring a lunch Meet on the staff parking side at 8:30 am.
8
El Nino Abnormally high surface ocean temperatures off the coast of South America Causes unusual weather patterns across the globe
9
El Nino Starts because the easterly trade winds weaken and allow the warm waters in the Western Pacific to move east toward South America This changes where the convection current occurs. Causing rain where it usually doesn't occur and drought where it usually rains
