Objective: Analyze Tecumseh’s use of rhetoric in Address to the Osages. Let’s think: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 What does it mean to pacify something? What is a benefactor? If you are desolate, how are you? What’s it mean if you allegedly done something? If you are invigorated, how do you feel? What’s it mean if someone is feeble? Who were the first Americans? What has happened to the first Americans?

Chief Tecumseh, leader of the Shawnee, was an important figure in the Native American fight against white settlers’ encroachment on Native lands during the late 18th century. Today, he continues to be regarded as one of the most highly-regarded Native American leaders of his time. As you read his speech, think about how he uses rhetoric to advance his claim. Directions: Write your objective & name at the top. Read Address to the Osages along with Mrs. Rolfe just to get a feel for it. Answer the Comprehension questions on page 13. Count off 1-3 in your group. If you are a “1”: Draw boxes around the “Great Father/Spirit’s” feelings. If you are a “2”: Underline the comparisons made to the “white man”. If you are a “3”: Draw clouds around past actions of the “white man”. (EVERYONE): In the margin, write “logos, pathos,” or “ethos” next to these: Draw a star next to your BEST answer to numbers 4 & 5. Explain it to team members who didn’t have your same number. Turn to page 14 and answer the EQ on your own: EQ: How does Tecumseh use rhetoric to advance his claim in Address to the Osages? Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support your answer in an ACES-style response.
