Genesis 5 & 11 and the Age of the Earth
The Biblical Age of the Earth Assumptions No gap between Genesis 1:1 and 1:2 Each day of Genesis 1 is a solar day
2
Genesis 5 & 11 and the Age of the Earth
The Calculations of Genesis 5 & 11 Genesis 5 This is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day when God created man, He made him in the likeness of God. He created them male and female, and He blessed them and named them Man in the day when they were created.
3
Genesis 5 & 11 and the Age of the Earth
When Adam had lived one hundred and thirty years, he became the father of a son in his own likeness, according to his image, and named him Seth. Then the days of Adam after he became the father of Seth were eight hundred years, and he had other sons and daughters. So all the days that Adam lived were nine hundred and thirty years, and he died.
4
Genesis 5 & 11 and the Age of the Earth
Seth lived one hundred and five years, and became the father of Enosh. Then Seth lived eight hundred and seven years after he became the father of Enosh, and he had other sons and daughters. So all the days of Seth were nine hundred and twelve years, and he died.
5
Genesis 5 & 11 and the Age of the Earth
Enosh lived ninety years, and became the father of Kenan. Then Enosh lived eight hundred and fifteen years after he became the father of Kenan, and he had other sons and daughters. So all the days of Enosh were nine hundred and five years, and he died.
6
Genesis 5 & 11 and the Age of the Earth
Kenan, Mahalalel, Jared, Enoch, Methuselah, Lamech – Same basic story… Noah was five hundred years old, and Noah became the father of Shem, Ham, and Japheth.
7
Genesis 5 & 11 and the Age of the Earth
These are the records of the generations of Shem. Shem was one hundred years old, and became the father of Arpachshad two years after the flood; And Shem lived five hundred years after he became the father of Arpachshad, and he had other sons and daughters.
8
Genesis 5 & 11 and the Age of the Earth
Arpachshad lived thirty-five years, and became the father of Shelah; And Arpachshad lived four hundred and three years after he became the father of Shelah, and he had other sons and daughters. Shelah lived thirty years, and became the father of Eber; And Shelah lived four hundred and three years after he became the father of Eber, and he had other sons and daughters.
9
Genesis 5 & 11 and the Age of the Earth
Eber, Peleg, Reu, Serug, Nahor, Lamech – Same basic story again… Terah lived seventy years, and became the father of Abram, Nahor and Haran.
10
Genesis 5 & 11 and the Age of the Earth
But are there gaps in the genealogies??? “Became the father of” = Begot = yalad Passages use the “hiphil” voice Internal checks show only father-son relationships (see also Jude 14) The extra Cainan of Luke 3:36 In Greek LXX, but not in Hebrew OT Many early Greek manuscripts don’t have it Many early Church writers don’t mention it Likely a copying error by a Greek scribe

Genesis 5 & 11 and the Age of the Earth
The final calculations: Year of Abram’s birth = 2166 BC Years between the Flood and Abram = +352 Date of the Flood = 2518 BC Years between Adam and the Flood = +1656 Adam’s year of Creation = 4174 BC The age of the earth is – 1 = 6,185 years old!

The Scientific Age of the Earth Earth’s Magnetic Field Produced by a 6,000,000,000A electric current circulating in the earth’s core Measured since 1835 and found to have a half-life of 1,400 years In 4,000 BC, strength of magnetic field would have been 12 gauss Age of the earth based on the strength of the magnetic field is 6,000 to 8,700 years old

Helium in the Atmosphere Helium is primarily produced as the result of radioactive decay Helium does not escape the atmosphere Assuming zero helium at creation, it would only take 40,000 years to produce all the helium in the atmosphere Helium is also added from other sources

The Rings of Saturn Saturn has over 1,000 rings, many braided and intertwined Gravity would have flattened them in much less than 1,000,000 years

Volcanoes on Io Live volcanoes have been found on Io Io should be completely cold if billions of years old

Rates of Erosion on the Earth Continents are eroding at a rate of 20,000,000,000 tons per year Would take only about 14,000,000 years for the continents to completely erode away

The Decay of Short Period Comets Short period comets have a period of less than 100 years Comets lose mass as they orbit the sun, and most would not last 10,000 years Short period comets are not being replenished

Tightly Folded Strata Strata (rock layers), sometimes thousands of feet thick, are often found tightly folded Strata are sometimes supposed to have been solid for hundreds of millions of years before being folded Usually there are few, if any, signs of cracking or fracturing Therefore, strata must have been “wet” or unsolidified when folded

Existence of Pleochroic Halos Rings of discoloration in Precambrian granite caused by the decay of Polonium-218 These halos are found without any evidence of halos from the parent elements These halos would not form in molten rock Therefore, the granite must have been formed (created) in a solid state

Carbon-14 in the Earth’s Atmosphere Carbon-14 is produced when Nitrogen-14 is bombarded by cosmic radiation 14C combines with Oxygen to form CO2 When an animal or plant dies, the 14C would decay while the 12C would not Animals and plants are carbon-dated by comparing the ratio of 14C to 12C 14C is only at 70% of equilibrium in the atmosphere Therefore, the maximum age of the atmosphere is 15,000 years old

Carbon Dioxide Wells There are 6 CO2 wells in the world, all located well below the earth’s surface All of the U.S. wells are found in Paleozoic strata (allegedly over 240,000,000 years old) Samples from the wells all had abundant 14C, which would make all of the wells less than 15,000 years old The same problem is found in CO2 recovered from gas and oil wells

Genesis 5 & 11 and the Age of the Earth
Carbon-14 in Fossils Fossils from all eras have been dated using the 14C dating method “Old” fossils should have no 14C remaining All fossils tested were found to have significant percentages of 14C Coal samples from each of the geologic eras had similar percentages of 14C Cenozoic (Eocene) = 0.26% modern carbon Mesozoic (Cretaceous) = 0.21 pmc Paleozoic (Pennsylvanian) = 0.27 pmc
33
Genesis 5 & 11 and the Age of the Earth
Conclusion The Biblical and scientific evidence is overwhelmingly in favor of a young earth The earth does not have an AARP card; it probably is not even old enough to be independent But it is dependent on God!
