2 afflict v. To bring or cause pain and suffering. Affliction n. A condition of pain, suffering, or trouble.

3 barren adj. Not fruitful; not reproducing.

4 consist v. To be made up; to contain.

5 drought n. A long period without rain.

6 erode v. To wear away bit by bit; to wear way by action of wind, water, or ice. Erosion n. The process or state of eroding.

7 expand v. 1. To make or become larger. 2. To give further details of. Expansion n. The act, process, or result of enlarging.

8 famine n. A widespread and long-lasting shortage of food that may cause starvation.

9 fertile adj. 1. Able to produce good crops. 2. Able to produce offspring. 3. Able to produce ideas; inventive.

10 oasis n. oases n. pl. A place where there is water in an otherwise dry area.

11 pasture n. A field of growing grass where animals can
eat; a meadow. v. To put animals out in a field to eat grass.

12 primitive adj. 1. From earliest times; ancient. 2. Simple or crude.

13 refuge n. 1. Shelter or protection from harm. 2. A place of safety. Refugee n. A person forced to leave her or his home or country seeking protection from danger.

14 revert v. To go back to an earlier condition, often one that is not as satisfactory.

15 teem v. To be filled; to occur in large numbers.

16 wither v. To become dried out; to lose freshness.
