1 SPECIFIC HEAT

2 AIM: DO NOW: HW:

3 AIM: Could you be more specific. DO NOW: HEY……
AIM: Could you be more specific??? DO NOW: HEY……. IT’S JUNE 21, BUT THE WATER IS COLD!!!!!!! WHAT GIVES????? HW: 1. WIZARD QUIZ DUE FRIDAY 2. Lab # 21 due TUESDAY 1/8

4 What is Specific Heat? How fast a substance heats up and cools down The JOULES (NRG) required to heat 1 gram of a substance by 1o Celsius

5 AIM: WHAT ARE THE TYPES OF HEAT. DO NOW: 1. TAKE OUT MIDTERM REVIEW
AIM: WHAT ARE THE TYPES OF HEAT? DO NOW: 1. TAKE OUT MIDTERM REVIEW. IF IT IS NOT FINISHED IT IS A DOT FOR EVERY DAY IT IS INCOMPLETE. DO NOT HAND IT IN UNLESS IT IS COMPLETE. HW: 1. INSOLATION WIZARD DUE TOMORROW AT 8AM 2. LAB # 21 DUE TUESDAY 1/8

10 What do the numbers tell us?
The higher the number, the longer it takes to heat up and cool down. The lower the number, the faster it will heat up and cool down.

11 Specific Heats of Common Materials
Which substance has the highest specific heat? Which substance has the lowest? Which one will heat up and cool down fastest?

12 So, how does this relate to the Earth?
The crust of our planet is made up of 2 kinds of rock: Basalt and Granite. These rocks have low specific heat, and therefore heat up fast, and cool off fast.

13 What does the water feel like during the early day?
Water heats up very slowly due to its HIGH specific heat. This is why the sand feels so hot in the day time, while the water still feels cold. What will the water feel like later during the day??

14 AIM: HOW DOES SPECIFIC HEAT AFFECT OUR WEATHER AND CLIMATE
AIM: HOW DOES SPECIFIC HEAT AFFECT OUR WEATHER AND CLIMATE? DO NOW: Try and explain this using specific heat! HW: Lab #21 due Tuesday/Lab # 22 due in next lab period (pd 1 and 7)

15 Explain this using specific heat!

16 Therefore: Coastal cities have small temperature ranges Deserts have extreme temperature ranges This is both daily and yearly

17 PROPOSE A POSSIBLE REASON AS TO WHY DALLAS HAS SUCH A BIG DIFFERENCE BETWEEN WINTER AND SUMMER TEMPERATURES BUT SAN DIEGO DOES NOT. BOTH CITIES ARE AT THE SAME (OR SIMILAR) LATITUDES.

18

19 DAILY TEMPERATURE LAG Highest daily temp’s usually occur a few hours after noon. Earth requires time to heat up and re-radiate energy

20 SEASONAL TEMP. LAG Highest seasonal and lowest seasonal temp’s usually occur a month or more after the solstices. Again…Earth requires time to heat up and cool down

21 The longest lag times are usually found near large bodies of water……..
WHY?????

22

23 What is a heat equator? The thermal equator (also known as "the heat equator") is a belt encircling the Earth, defined by the set of locations having the highest mean annual temperature at each longitude around the globe.
