FISHER HOUSE FOUNDATION MISSION
Construct new Fisher Houses Support Existing Fisher Houses Provide Quality of Life Programs to Military and Veterans’ Families At the heart of what we do will always be expanding the network of Fisher Houses. And even though the Secretary of the Army, Navy, Air Force or Department of Veterans Affairs accepts responsibility for the operation and maintenance of their Fisher Houses, we continue to support the network of existing houses. Last week we received the acceptance of a proffer to help enhance landscaping at the Bethesda Fisher Houses. We’re helping the Travis Fisher Houses by picking up the linen contract until the bureaucracy has a chance to enter into a contract. We coordinate in-kind gifs when those opportunities arise…. And always allow donors to designate their gifts. And we support Quality of Life through programs like the Newman’s Own Awards, our Scholarship Programs, and our support of Adaptive Sports through the Warrior Games and the Invictus Games.

Here’s a screenshot from our web page showing our current stats.
This year we’ll hit the mark of offering 9 million days of lodging in Fisher Houses….that will happen in May. And at the end of the year …. We approach half a billion dollars in savings since inception. And at our current pace, we’ll hit a billion dollars in another ten years. That’s the return on investment.

A STRONG ORGANIZATION Unique Public – Private Partnership
Highest Charity Ratings Financially Sound We always describe our program as a unique Public – Private Partnership. We provide a resource to address an unmet need …. Give it as a gift to the Department of Defense or Department of Veterans Affairs …. And they operate and maintain the houses so we can focus on blessing the next community. The houses become a catalyst for community support which makes it easier to maintain the houses. We are not the typical charity. We don’t do direct marketing…. We focus on our programs. We tell people what we do and many times they want to be a part of what we do. As a result, we have garnered the highest charity ratings at Charity Navigator and Charity Watch. For the past 15 years we’ve received a Four Star rating from Charity Navigator. We have always had an A Plus rating from Charity Watch. When people want to know who the good charities are…. We’re at the top of the list when it comes to Military and Veterans Charities. We’re also financially sound. When you build a Fisher House…. And it’s a gift …. It’s good to have the cash to complete the project when you start it.

A STRONG ORGANIZATION It can be tough to find good stats on the nonprofit community…. And there’s a lag in reporting. In 2015 there were 1,184,547 nonprofit organizations registered with the IRS. Less than 300,000 of those filed a 990 or 990 EZ…. The rest are presumed to have filed a 990N – the postcard. Most nonprofits are small. These graphs show that 62% of charities report revenue less than $500,000. There’s another 28% that’s presumed to be in that category for a total of 90%. Only 14% had assets of $500,000 or more. In the eyes of the IRS, you are a small nonprofit if you have assets of less than $500,000. You’re a medium nonprofit if you have assets between $500,000 and $10 million… and you’re a large nonprofit if you have assets of more than $10 million.

This is a table showing how Fisher House Foundation compares with other military charities.
I have a handout…. I know it’s tough to read. The first column is the CharityWatch Rating …. The second is the rating from Charity Navigator. The Income and Net Assets figures come from the latest figures on Charity Navigator. I hope you’ll agree that Fisher House Foundation looks pretty good.

2018 EXPENSES Construction of Houses Support to Existing Houses
Scholarships Hero Programs Adaptive Sports Most of our funds go to the Construction of New Houses. In 2018 we donated Fisher Houses worth $31 million, and the value of construction in progress is almost $39 million. We support both the Warrior Games and the Invictus Games. Our primary focus is ensuring that Friends and Family who have been on the journey of recovery have the opportunity to be a part of the Games and celebrate these milestones.

Our ChallengeS Press Opportunities Consistent and Accurate Messaging
Forecasting Support We can never know when press opportunities will arise. When they do… it’s vital to have consistent and accurate messaging. Don’t hesitate to call with any questions so we can ensure accurate messaging. We are never entitled to someone’s support…. And we don’t always know when someone may leave a bequest for us. As a result we always tend to be conservative in forecasting support.
