Describing Matter 15.2
2
Physical Property – characteristic of a material that you can observe without changing the substance
Ex: color, size, shape, density, melting point, boiling point
3
How are physical properties used to separate materials?
Using Magnetism
4
Chemical Property – characteristic of a substance that indicates whether it can undergo a certain chemical change Ex: flammable, combustible, may react to light
5
Physical Change – a change in size, shape, or state of matter; substance does not change identity when it undergoes a physical change Ex: melting ice, cutting paper, breaking glass, distillation
6
Distillation is the process of separating substances in a mixture by evaporating a liquid and condensing its vapor.
7
Chemical Change – a change in one substance to another substance
Ex: fireworks explode, rusting metal
8
The Law of Conservation of Mass
states that mass of all substances present before a chemical change equals the mass of all substances after the change Must start and end with the same amount
