If you are in years 7,8 or 9 you have a practice timetable to help you learn for History, Geography and Religious Studies. You don’t need to wait for your teacher to set you this practice – you can practice it when you want. Remember to do it a few times so you really know it!

The key to effective learning is not to wait until the week before your assessment. Revision should be an on going process – it is just practice. If you were going to play an important football match you wouldn’t just practice the week before… you would do it day after day….. Learning your work is just the same.

12. In your booklet you have a timetable for a week.
1. Write in the time you have after school (this will be different at the weekend).
2. Write in the commitments you have when you can’t do retrieval practice.
3. Now write down when you CAN do retrieval practice.
4. You will also be given other homework – so make sure you plan time to do this as well.
5. You should read for at least 20 minutes every day.

This is just an example. Students will need to adjust to their own timetables – I haven’t added in before school – but I think this is a great time to revise! Emphasise the importance of balancing school work, family time, keeping fit, friends, out of school interests, and part time work for older students. Much revision will be set as h/w but students should be encouraged to do it in a cycle whether it is set or not! Remind them that other h/w may also be set. They need to build in revisiting the revision every week/ month so it sticks in the long term memory. Timetables are useful all year round – not just before their exams. Please remind students about reading – however old they are!

Students should make a weekly revision timetable – we need to encourage them to build in regular learning not just cram before an assessment week. There is an example on the next slide – they can write in their other commitments – and then decide when to do some retrieval practice each week.
