Know What do you know about motion and design of vehicles? Want to know What do you want to know about motion and design of vehicles? USE A SIMPLE KWL CHART TO PRE-ASSESS UNDERSTANDINGS ABOUT MOTION AND DESIGN. Let’s begin with a brief discussion. What do you know about the motion and design of vehicles? (Record on KWL Chart)

4 Engaging Scenario You are members of a NASCAR team. This year due to the high gas prices and reported shortages, the NASCAR sponsors present a new challenge for the drivers and their teams. Each team will be given the same materials (bucket) to construct a vehicle. The winner of this year’s race will be the vehicle that travels the greatest distance using rubber band energy rather than fossil fuel. Fabulous prizes will be awarded to the team that travels the greatest distance. You are members of a NASCAR team. First let’s look at how science note booking will fit into this investigation.

5 Engaging Scenario Your pit (bucket) contains all the parts you will need for this investigation. Review your technical drawing to see how pieces fit together. Your design should be based upon the standard vehicle, but adaptations may be made by your team.

6 Focus Question(s) What design works best to propel the vehicle forward the greatest distance? Describe the role of the rubber band as related to the motion of the vehicle. This is your investigable questions.

7 Prediction Write a prediction describing what you think will happen.

8 Planning Plan what to do to accomplish your task.
Plan how to collect data. Decide how to organize your data to share with the whole group.

9 Data/Observations Time for the test drive!
Record your data and observations. Use the chart paper provided so that each team can share their results.

10 What have you Learned? Examine your data. What claims can you make about the design and motion of your vehicle? What is your evidence? Revisit your prediction. Examine the prediction that you made at the beginning of the lesson. Do you wish to affirm (keep) or revise your prediction? 14 Forces A force is a push or a pull.
Force gives an object the energy to move, stop moving, or change direction.

15 Balanced Forces Balanced forces do not cause a change in motion. They are equal in size and opposite in direction.

16 Unbalanced Forces Unbalanced forces always cause a change in motion. They are not equal and opposite.

17 Newton’s Third Law Forces always come in pairs - known as "action-reaction force pairs."

Potential energy - energy ready to be released Kinetic energy - energy of motion Friction - opposes the vehicle’s forward motion as it changes the energy of motion into the energy of heat Talk about concepts as they relate to this investigation. Clear up any misconceptions.
