1 Warm-Up: Function Tables
Friday – October 26th, 2012 Warm-Up: Function Tables Complete the K-W part of a K-W-L chart. Write down: K  everything you KNOW about function tables W  what you WANT to know about function tables L  what you LEARNED (fill in at the end of the lesson) Essential Question: How can I compare functions represented algebraically, graphically, and in tables? Use catalyst as an anticipation question.

2 Friday – October 26th, 2012 Opening: Guided Notes Follow along with PowerPoint to fill in Guided Notes: Look at bolded/underlined terms Raise your hand if you need me to slow down Essential Question: How can I compare functions represented algebraically, graphically, and in tables? Use catalyst as an anticipation question.

3 Equations and Ordered Pairs
Every ordered pair is written as ( x , y ) x is the input, y is the output . If an ordered pair is a solution, then both sides will equal each other. Big idea to drive home here: precise instrument  accurate mesaurement

4 Examples y = 2x + 3 ; (5, 6) 6 = 2(5) + 3 6 = 10 + 3 6 = 13 NO
2x – 3y = -11 ; (2, 5) 2(2) – 3(5) = -11 4 – 15 = -11 = -11 -11 = -11 YES x y x y Ask your students what do they THINK it means.

5 Practice y = 4x – 2 ; (2, 6) 6 = 4(2) – 2 6 = 8 – 2 6 = 6 YES
2(0) + 4(-2) = 8 0 + (-8) = 8 -8 = 8 NO x y x y Ask your students what do they THINK it means.

6 Function Tables Function tables list ordered pairs that are solutions to the equation Always check at least two ordered pairs before you match an equation to a function table.

7 Example 3 x -2 2 4 6 y -8 10 y = 4x (-2, -8) -8 = 4(-2) -8 = -8 YES x
2 4 6 y -8 10 x y x y (0, -2) y = 4x -2 = 4(0) -2 = 0 NO Ask your students what do they THINK it means.

8 Practice 3 x y -2 2 -1 1 -4 -6 y = -2x – 2 (-2, 2) 2 = -2(-2) – 2
1 -4 -6 y = -2x – 2 (-2, 2) 2 = -2(-2) – 2 2 = 4 – 2 2 = 2 (-1, 0) y = -2x – 2 0 = -2(-1) – 2 0 = 2 -2 2 = 2 YES x y x y Ask your students what do they THINK it means.

9 Example 4 Pick the function that matches c = 2b (-1, -2) -2 = 2(-1 )
-2 = -2 (0, -1) -1 = 2(0) -1 = 0 NO c = b – 1 (-1 , -2) -2 = -1 – 1 -2 = -2 (0, -1) -1 = (0) – 1 -1 = -1 YES b c -1 -2 1 2 3 b c b c b c b c Ask your students what do they THINK it means.

10 Practice 4 Pick the function that matches y = 5x (20, 100) 100 = 5(20)
100 = 100 (25, 75) 75= 5(25) 75 = 125 NO x 20 25 30 60 75 Y 100 70 40 -140 -230 y = -6x + 220 (20, 100) 100 = -6(20) + 220 100 = 100 = 100 y = -6x + 220 (25, 70) 70 = -6(25) + 220 70 = 70 = 70 Ask your students what do they THINK it means.

11 Graphed Lines A graphed line contains the possible solutions to a linear function. All the values in the function table should be on the line. Big idea to drive home here: precise instrument  accurate mesaurement

12 Example 5 Fill in the function table. Age Blood Flow 10 15 25 30 40 29
10 15 25 30 40 29 Ask your students what do they THINK it means. 50 21 30 10 10 4 5 15 25

13 Practice 5 Fill in the function table. Time Income 1 3 7 11 8 9 11 15
1 3 7 11 8 9 Ask your students what do they THINK it means. 11 15 19

14 Example 6 y = x + 5 (5 , 10) 10 = 5 + 5 10 = 10 (10 , 15) 15 = 10 + 5
David bought some blank video tapes and a video tape holder. The table below shows the total cost in dollars, y, for x video tapes and a video tape holder. y = x + 5 (5 , 10) 10 = 5 + 5 10 = 10 (10 , 15) 15 = 15 = 15 Ask your students what do they THINK it means.

15 Practice 6 C) C= 0.10b + 5 (200, 20) 20 = 0.1(200) + 5 20 = 15
The table below shows the price for different numbers of business cards. Which equation models the total cost, C, of b business cards? . Ask your students what do they THINK it means. C) C= 0.10b + 5 (200, 20) 20 = 0.1(200) + 5 20 = 15 D) C= 0.05b + 10 (200, 20) 20 = 0.05(200) + 10 20 = 20 D) C= 0.05b + 10 (200, 20) 20 = 0.05(200) + 10 20 = 20 B) C= 5b + 10 (200, 20) 20 = 5(200) + 10 15 = 1010 A) C= b - 85 (200, 20) 20 = 200 – 85 20 = 115

16 Example 7 Which graph models the following function table? time 1 2 6 income 8 7 Ask your students what do they THINK it means.
