Chapter 2.5 Beginnings of Slavery Key Terms
Immune - a natural resistance to a disease. Middle Passage - the voyage across the Atlantic Ocean that enslaved Africans were forced to endure. African Diaspora – enslaved Africans were sent all across the New World. Diaspora means the scattering of people .

Review: West African Slavery
West African Slaves in West Africa were valuable trade items. Having slaves raised the status of the owner. made kingdoms very rich and well-known: Ghana, Mali, Songhai People became slaves when they were conquered by other tribes, if they were criminals, or if they had a debt. Slaves did work for slave owners without pay. Manual labor and domestic chores. Life: more like servants, were not treated so brutally, sometimes slaves could gain social status – military generals, can buy their freedom, if they had kids their kids were not automatically slaves. Many times they were treated like members of the household. They could even accrue/build up wealth and power.
