What kind of skills are important to have a job? Are there jobs that require specific skills? What would be an example of a skill that is worthless? On page 69, do activity 3A about the skills needed for working at a job. What kind of jobs and skills go together?

5 SKILLS FOR SUCCESS Self- Management Critical Thinking Sensitivity Decision Making Language It is important that you have the ability to manage yourself. Your time, body, emotions, drives, desires should all be managed. Critical thinking is the ability to be able to pull a thought apart and understand why. Understanding why will allow you to succeed. Knowing when to do something and what the right thing to do is sensitivity. You have to have a common sense. Being able to make decisions goes with sensitivity. You have to have a direction and know how to make decisions on that. Being able to speak and write effectively will allow for you to succeed more easily and communicate well.

What does it mean to market yourself? What is the best way to market yourself? What are bad ways to market yourself? In groups, answer the following questions and present them to the class.

12 Negative Questions Negative “yes” or “no” questions are used to check information Responses are based on if the information is true It is also based on if the event happened Didn’t you receive the package? No, I did not receive the package. “Yes” or “no” questions are often opposite in Korean and English 결혼 안 했어요? 네, 아직 안 했어요. – In Korean, this is right. Didn’t you get married? No, I did not get married. – In English, this is right.

13 Negative Questions Negative questions can also be used to express opinions politely: “Wouldn’t it be good if I could he could take a vacation?” – polite “It would be good if he could take a vacation.” – can be considered direct Negative questions which are polite requests usually start in the following ways… Won’t you…? Wouldn’t you…? Why don’t you…? Sometimes sarcasm – “Why don’t you jump in front of a bus?”

14 Negative Questions Consider the questions. Are they polite requests or confirming information? What are the right answers? Didn’t you eat breakfast? Won’t you go to the store with me? Why don’t you help me with this homework? Don’t you speak Korean well? Didn’t you bring your textbook to class? Wouldn’t you help an old lady cross the street?

Look on page 70 at the ads in your book After reading through the ads, consider the following questions: What skills are needed to be successful in this job? How can you express marketability in this job? How can you succeed in this job? Consider if you were trying to get this job

We learned about interviewing people for the news. What about if you are being interviewed for a job. What kind of questions will they ask? What should be your persona? What would you bring with you to the interview?

Question 2 Talk about strengths that would benefit the company; unique and marketable strengths What are your weaknesses? Consider a dream or goal for someone’s life. Consider what a person needs to do to achieve this dream. Create a presentation using the following questions: What does this person want from their life? How can they achieve their dreams (roadmap)? What do they need to have to get there? Create a presentation. Think critically about what they need.
