1 Revisiting Differentiation
Math Alliance April 5 Beth Schefelker, Melissa Hedges & Judy Winn

2 What is differentiation?
Differentiation is an organized, yet flexible way to adjust the content, process, and/or product of instruction to teach the same concepts to student with a variety of readiness levels. It is not a strategy; it is an approach. Adapted from Tomlinson, 1999; Farmer, 1996; and Alliance Participants, 2010

3 In your texts…. Reaching All Learners (SFAW)
Part 3: Differentiation Options (Everyday Mathematics) Extending the Lesson (HMH Expressions)

4 We will know we are successful when
WALT We are learning to…. Ensure access to the mathematics for all students We will know we are successful when We can critique suggestions in our texts for differentiation and make our own suggestions for successfully addressing students’ challenges in understanding the mathematics

5 Circumference lesson Read the lesson
Identify the learning intention and success criteria Think of student in your class What about the students’ mathematics understanding may interfere with reaching the success criteria? What other barriers need to be considered? Review and discuss the differentiation options for this lesson (strengths and weaknesses) Develop 2-3 suggestions that would support student learning of the mathematics

6 Group posters by series
Read the posters in your group Discuss differentiation suggestions What commonalities or themes do you see? How do these address readiness levels, misconceptions, other barriers? Add to the suggestions on your poster if indicated
